At the moment I'd prefer Brian the blade to Negative Nigel
Hmmm you reckon Brian the Blade would have this side challenging for autos?

No seriously, who? Hard mode: Tony Pulis is employed this time so you might have to think this through.

Oh fucking hell, I'll debate with anyone the virtues of my beloved team but you tend to get all defensive and bitter. Name calling too, how impressive

If I wasn't 5000 miles away I'd be at every game sunshine, and if anyone was getting on my tits I'd have a word, not do all my gobbing on here.

"Yawn"

Very good post and extremely debate worthy. Whereas we should all sit up and pay attention to your slagging of the fans, now that's worth a "Yawn"
Must admit I have difficulty remembering a post from you that is anything other than destructive or negative. As for name calling ? Once again pot, kettle, black.

So stop reading them, it's not rocket science as someone once said.

You really need to take your own advice

And do what, stop reading my own posts?

Listen, you started out boring me and now you've elevated your position to uber boring. No point going down the childish route of bickering on an open message board as all you're doing is repeating yourself. If you have a real gripe then send me a PM but ffs, give it a rest on here, I'm sure the good folks on the board are getting fed up of the to'ing and fro'ing also.

shite negative football

We had 14 shots and got ourselves in a variety of other good situations that don't show up in the stats eg Davies squaring it across the box.

And we scored 4 on Tuesday and were being encouraged to get 5 by the management.

I'm not sure how that can reasonably be construed as negative.

AISI what went wrong yesterday was:
  • we were generally poor at passing, that was contagious throughout the team
  • Davies was off his game and didn't link the play anything like as well as he did against Scunthorpe
  • Holt didn't have quite the same energy as Tuesday
  • shooting was poor: Baxter, Murphy, and Coutts
  • our makeshift centre halves were once again exposed by some neat, but fairly basic forward play for their first

Quote me out of context. At times it is brilliant to watch.

Highlights probably Gillingham, Scunny, Preston and Saints at home and Brizzle, QPR away with spells in plenty of others.

Even when it is slow and overly methodical, we are at least trying to keep the ball and play the game the right way. Unfortunately a lot of our crowd don't like that.

I go and watch Burton play four or so times a season as they are near to me. The other week I went and down to ten men and one nil down, they got a free kick on the half way line. Rather then lump it forward, they played it short went out wide, then passed it all the way back to the keeper, who then played it back out to the wing, built again and ended up getting an attacking throw.

The home crowd clapped them enthusiatically and generally were appreciative of trying to keep the ball and play it simple. It's quite an eye opener, I shudder to think the reaction had we done similar at the lane.

Exactly. I enjoy watching us try to play football in this way. The team has its faults and weaknesses, but for me it's a work in progress and I'd like to see us have the courage of our convictions to build on what we've got.

I would add that:
  1. I don't think this is the right way it's just another way. I enjoyed the team under Bassett, now I'd like to see us succeed by playing possession football.
  2. It's not the fans it's some vocal fans. I wonder what the proportions really are. It's very easy to think the negativity is representative when it's passionate and vocal. Maybe it is - but I'm not so sure.

And if we get there, how confident can we be that we can play three consecutive high level games to get through?

Aisi we don't necessarily have to: we just have to play better than the opposition, who will likely similarly be tired, have players out of form, or out of position, able or unable to cope with the pressure etc. All/Most of the factors affecting us will be affecting them too, whoever they are. They might even have the weight of expectation as we're so crap ;)

One advantage we might have is the crowd. In these big one-off games are when we really seem to get behind the team.

As well as the above we also have to be lucky. You can maximise your chances by playing to the best of your ability, but over 2 + 1 games there's always going to be an element of luck, there just isn't time for it to even itself out.

But all of that is getting ahead of ourselves: we have to get there first. One game at a time.

All/Most of the factors affecting us will be affecting them too

I accept all that, but the main factor I was on about was our inconsistency, which the others don't have as bad. One can only hope, but (and speaking as a happy-clapping, glass half full type) we need the others to drop their form to balance ours.

I'm livid .. Furious .. P'd off with that today. Boring , laboured sideways football

Genuine question - has anyone deserved their wages today ??
If you were giving marks out of ten would anyone get above 5 ??

Maybe too harsh so feel free to shoot me down

The players: who applauded the fans at the end, and the fans who applauded the team at the end.

We had more shots today than, afaict, anyone else in the division apart from Orient.

The Beard's recovery run to (somewhat jammily) intercept a ball into the box when (once again) we'd lost possession in a dangerous area was a sight to behold.

We also looked fairly dangerous from corners! It's all relative and maybe I'm overreacting to prolonged period of shiteness from dead balls, but I haven't seen a floater (on the pitch) for a few weeks now.

For me, the play-offs are to a significant extent a lottery. We might stumble into a good period of form, we might stumble into a bad one, we might stumble into a bad one but be up against a team in a worse one. If we make it our opponents may well be inconsistent too.

I was trying to be half-full by saying that even if we're crap (not unprecedented) the other team might just be crapper.

Bob Harris's first half corner was the best corner since Cotterill was here. Alas no one was alert or hungry enough to attack it as it went straight through the 6 yard box. That's where I don't blame the manager ,if you are not alert or hungry enough in front of 20k fans then its the players with the problem and no matter how much motivation is given from the sidelines it shouldn't come into it.

I'm just depressed after yesterdays result. But for me, we will need to be not crap, or not as crap, for three matches in a row. And right now, Sunday after the day before...

OK, I admit the ability (missing yesterday) to pass to each other over distances of 5 to 10 yards is a pre-requisite for progress.

So you follow my posts, you can't help yourself from making petulant little digs and you accuse me of being a troll. Laughable.

Grow up, you're acting like a small child.

Its one thing turning up in numbers, its another thing being part of, a) a library, and b) whingeing moaning impatient wrist slashers.
You may think its justifiable given our lowly league position, but believe me, the crowds mood definitely transposes to player/team performance.
It'll never change though and its not just the Bramall Lane crowd, all of em are the same. Nature of the football fan beast alas!
However, we were shite today and if that's how folk choose to try and support the team, hey ho. I think its hugely counter productive and helps no one except the fan screaming the abuse.

In order to be affected by a negative atmosphere the players would have to care. The crap we have to put up with runs much deeper than the fans being fed up.

It doesn't matter who is in control at this club, it doesn't matter who the manager is, it doesn't matter who the players are, it doesn't matter what system we play, it doesn't matter how poor the opposition is or what League were playing in, it is always shit because they are absolutely incapable of producing anything worth watching. Even our so called "GOOD TIMES " ............Good times!!!!!!! that's a laugh, have come as a result of boring mind numbing hoofball.
Every attempt to do anything other than play hoofball results in failure.

The absolute inability to do a simple thing like play decent football for any decent period of time is a joke and you'd have to ask yourself "ARE THEY DOING THIS ON FUCKING PURPOSE", Is there some plan to literally phase us out of existence via boredom and apathy? How can a football club be this bad for so much of the time?
Surely the law of averages suggest that a biggish club will find a formula to at least leave it's mark occasionally.
Everybody else manages to do something decent occasionally and do it for a decent prolonged period of time as well, everybody else gets their periods of success even if only occasionally......... But not us.

It's years and years and years and years and years of the same mind numbing shit, no matter who we have on the pitch, no matter who the manager is, no matter how much we spend, no matter how big the squad is and no matter what the level of opposition is. No wonder our fans are sick of it.

We have to sit and watch whilst every club of a decent size, (no bigger than us by the way) shocks the football world and wins the Cup or does something incredible and qualifies for Europe based on finishing in an extremely high league position.......... But not us.

The level of conditioning to accept failure at this club is everything that is to blame in my opinion, it's now become impossible to accept the fact that we could be successful, but other mid range clubs in recent years have just got on with it and they have all achieved something that we will never achieve in a million years because they refuse to believe that they are only there to make the numbers up.

You make some credible and emotionally charged points there JJ.
I can't disagree with the general sentiment in truth. However, I just can't upset myself too much at our general abject failure historically and our disastrous showing in recent past. My life would be miserable if I took it to heart like some obviously do, there's so much more to it than SU fuckin FC, so whilst I'll continue to go and shake my head ruefully on many occasions, I'll also continue to enjoy the rare good times and hope that one day some fucker brings about a sea change at this club.
