I never thought United could find yet another extraordinary way to fail in the play-offs for the eighth time to match past tragedies, but they did. Last night never happened did it? Over the years the managers change, the players change, even the owners change, yet our club repeats failure time and time again with a cocktail of bad luck, injuries, drama and always a long sad journey home; "silentjourneyhome" is the nickname of a poster on Bladesmad and doesn't that sum up being a Blade.
We talk about the law of averages when it should apply to our owners choosing a successful manager for a change; when it should apply to us winning the play-offs one day; when it should apply to us having the rub of the green from referees and Lady Luck in general. The law of averages is a sound theory but it doesn't apply to Sheffield 2 it seems.
I'm an old weary Blade whose watched the lads for decades, a Life of Misery I always say. I eat drink and sleep Sheffield United to an unhealthy degree. I couldn't sleep last night. I am up early this morning punching the keyboard with more aggression than usual. It hurts so badly and yet I know full well in my heart of hearts it shouldn't matter that much, it's not that important on the scale of everything in my life, it's only a game. I should steer my mind to concentrate on other things and the summer is a welcome opportunity to do just that.
Does anybody know a good therapist? After watching our manager conduct himself for the last 19 months I think he needs one!!
His pitch side bollockings are so counter-productive, what about encouragement? ; his post match criticisms of certain players are cruel and so unnecessary; he seems to fall out with good, honest pros and clearly harbours a grudge.
I know it's his way and it has been for 17 years in management and that Northern blokes and Blades in general are not that good on the softer inter-personal skills, but if he stays with United, which I think he needs to change.
I suggest he changes his Assistant Manager to replace him with someone who compensates for and complements his personality rather than copies it. I suggest he finds a new Head Scout who can produce a few game changing players rather than modest journeymen. I also suggest he finds a therapist who just might teach the old dog to be more "up" and positive in everything he does, in particular his match tactics!
After all if he doesn't change he will carry on repeating the modest achievements of his 17 years as a manager and United deserve much more than that surely. With us he has done so many good things and yet he has made so many serious mistakes. He will have learned new lessons from those mistakes despite his undoubted wealth of experience and last night he resolved to concentrate on certain key areas of the squad which have been so weak for so long. He even said " at the expense of the cups if need be" Halleluiah!
I have been a regular critic of Clough and I think he would understand if he was sacked today. However the Board have given him a lot of power and all the tools for the job and it would cost a fortune to dislodge him and all his cronies. That would be a major and expensive decision with all the risks of starting again with new management and players and all the time it would take to put it all in place; inevitably we would not be ready for next season.
I like Clough, he's a straightforward bloke. In my bones I sense that given time he can put something big in place and because of what he is it will have strength. In my opinion he has to tackle and suppress his weaknesses before his strengths can win through though. Send for the therapist!!
