I just noticed that on the last day of the season, Chelsea are at home to Wolves, and Leicester are at home to Man U!
I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing
A win at Soton means we're guaranteed to make up ground on at least 2, possibly all 4.
This is the point at which my brain caught fire.
I know it's way too early to see this scenario even coming into play, BUT, a win at home today and a result at struggling Leicester and who knows?

Man Utd are in such form (and being helped so much) that I feel they'll end up 3rd.
Man City being banned doesn't have much bearing as the difference between 4th and 5th is small but 6th is far away sorry, quite large 6pts and GD so effectively 7 pts to make up in 4 matches; it won't be done. At this point only Wolves of the 4 clubs mentioned are a concern to us we're all fighting for 7th or better 8th is just a wild card for now. It's in our hands.

Last time I did a permutation calc was in 2007 when I worked out that on the last day there were 9 possible results of which eight kept Blades up.

There‘s a simple equation for both permutations and combinations.....can’t remember it...and can’t be bothered to google it.

I've looked at the remaining fixtures for the teams in 3rd-9th (CHE, LEI, MNU, WOL, SHU, ARS, TOT) and it accounts for a total of 23 games.

With 3 results possible in each game that's 31,381,059,609 combinations. The question is how many of the 31 billion sees us end up in the top 4/5.

I haven't been able to work out yet how to do a full Monte Carlo simulation that spits out a count of how many times that happens but I've done an individual randomisation of the results manually 200 times.

If every result is equally likely for 7 teams in the simulation we finish in the top four 0.5% of the time and the top five 4% of the time.

Obviously win/draw/loss isn't equally likely. If the probability of each result was adjusted for opponent that probably wouldn't be in our favour. Trying to catch Leicester is hard enough without making a Leicester win at Bournemouth more than a 33.3% chance.

First of all, I don’t see us winning our last three.
However, Chelsea might not get another point, and if we beat Leicester we are just 2 points behind them with 2 to play!
Man U will make up the ground to get third, I have no doubt about that.
As for City, their ban will be overturned and an alternative punishment dished out. There’s a reason Pep was very confident in their victory. Shame, as if that was held I think we would definitely make Europe in one way or another.

But given how tight it could all end, I bet the Hawkeye team are extremely concerned about the failure of their system, and the premier league too given the failure of the VAR shower of shit to intervene too!! Theres clearly a reason nobody is commenting on it, And it’s self preservation to try and avoid saying anything to hurt their defence of any incoming legal claim!
Hopefully we will let it ride, and deal with it behind closed doors. I’m sure Wilder and Bettis visiting the involved parties to “discuss” the issues and the resulting implications will see us treated more favourably in future. Rather than legal action which would just see them did their heels in and do everything to fuck us over!

Still hard to believe we’ve given ourselves the chance though, the team deserve all the plaudits for their efforts.

6th would be nice as we’d go straight in to the group stage rather than the second qualifying round - unless Arsenal win the cup and finish below us in which case they’d go to the group stage at our expense (we’d be in the qualifying round).

If they draw any of the last three games the maximum amount of points mathematically available is 57, again one win for us, however goal difference would come into play.

I’ve got a feeling that it will come down to the last game of the season, but if we are to win all 3, doesn’t really matter what Arsenal, Tottenham and Burnley do we will finish no lower than 7th.
