It just occurred to me that United hold the record for the team spending most seasons in the top division since the major European competitions began in 1955 without ever having qualified for one - we have had 18 top division seasons since then. Our nearest "challengers" are Luton with 16 seasons, Wimbledon with 14 and Palace with 13 - and the latter 3 would all have qualified had the European ban and its aftermath not happened (Luton as League Cup winners in 1988, Wimbledon as FA Cup winners in 1988 and Palace finishing 3rd in 1991)*

We are cursed....

* I know Palace and Wimbledon have been in the Intertoto cup, but that doesn't count!

Bloody ell Dazzer.

If it wasn't bad news enough, there was no need to drum it home with 4 threads.

I think a banning is in order!

Actually, Blackpool with 14 seasons are also "challengers".

Never knowingly non-pedantic...

Is there something wrong with your machine mate?

Or are you going for the record number of duplications?!

2 seasons more than Luton in the top flight since 1955 now that is shocking.

Charlton have also done 14 top flight seasons in that period without European qualification.

we did finish 5th in 72 , which would have got us in europe today , admitted the shitty europa
so more circumstances being against us , as the expanded invitations , ie 4 cl and 2 europa didnt start till our wilderness years 78 -90 and lets not forget 5 seasons all english clubs were held back

Merged posts :)

I need to make a page with Dazzlers good news records on the main site I think!

We finished 5th in 61-62 (not 72) and, long story short (I wrote a long article about this in an old FB), we were nominated by the FA for the Fairs Cup along with the 2nd and 4th place finishers Burnley and Everton (3rd place Spurs won the cup and were hence in the Cup Winners' Cup). In its wisdom the Fairs Cup committe, decided that Wednesday (who had finished 6th) and Birmingham (17th!) should have the places along with Burnley. In the first programme of the 62-63 season, there was an article about how Dick Wragg and John Harris had travelled to Italy to have it out with the Fairs Cup Committee and had returned with the promise that, whilst Wednesday would get the 62-63 place, United won get an entry in 63-64. That promise, of course, was as bankable as the Leeds friendly promise a few years back...

Darren, seeing as your in the mood for a bit of statistical information.

My first game was a 7-3 win over Northampton Town in the Old 4th Division in 1982, i took my little lad to his first game where he saw a 5-3 over Bournemouth last saturday. It's got me thinking it has been quite rare that United have been involved in game where 8 or more have been scored in the last 30 years, so its probably quite rare for a father and son to have seen high scoring game where there has been that number of goals scored.

The others i can think of are

Brighton 5-4 89-90
Oldham 7-3 ZDS 90-91
Luton 6-3 94-95
Birmingham 4-4 96-97
Cardiff 5-3 03-04

Oldham was 7-2 not 7-3.

There is also last seasons 4-4 draw with Exeter, and 6-3 and 5-3 wins against Orient and Scunthorpe respectively in 1983-4,

I thought I was on for a personal record breaker last season at Rochdale. I've seen us win 5-1 away twice at Halifax and Oldham and when Doyle put us 5-1 up I thought we were certs to beat it.

The bizarre stat for all three games, we went behind in the first few mins.

Also a 4-4 v Birmingham on 24/8/96.

scrub that - in Brownie's original post!

the first game i took my brother to was v cardiff ( the 5-3 ) and the second was 5-0 v rotherham (a few days later) so as you can imagine he thought football was very exciting and full of goals ,not now though
