APFA partnership shows early result
The partnership between OFC and the Asia Pacific Football Academy (APFA) is already bearing fruit as APFA’s first Pacific Island player joins the academy at UK club Sheffield United.

Mickael Partodikromo of New Caledonia will leave APFA for the UK.
OFC partnered with the Christchurch-based APFA earlier this year with the goal of helping develop elite youth academies across Oceania and also to provide a pathway to international opportunities for promising young players from OFC's member associations.

Now this partnership is seeing its first success with Mickael Partodikromo, from New Caledonia, graduating from APFA to join Sheffield United's Youth Academy in the UK in early July.

Partodikromo first trialled at APFA in 2010 and having impressed the academy’s coaches he returned in 2011 to learn English alongside a further intensive football development programme. He then moved full-time to APFA in January 2012 joining Lincoln High School, APFA's education partner.

The 17-year-old trialled at several clubs in the UK in early 2013 before returning to join his compatriots at the OFC U-17 Championship in Vanuatu in April. Partodikromo couldn’t quite guide his country to U-17 FIFA World Cup qualification but has since gone on to secure himself a place at the academy of English League One club Sheffield United.

APFA managing director Andy Smith says this early success for the partnership with OFC is a great result.

"Mickael has worked hard and impressed coaches and scouts with his attitude, strength and determination,” Smith says.

“It is great to see a player from Oceania come through the full process at APFA – trial, learn English, succeed at high school and then secure the opportunity to continue their development overseas."

Head of Recruitment at Sheffield United’s academy Tony Walmsley says the club is pleased to be adding Partodikromo to their academy ranks.

“Mickael is an exciting prospect with a great opportunity in front of him. I look forward to seeing him develop towards his potential,” Walmsley says.

For OFC technical director Patrick Jacquemet, Partodikromo’s move to the UK is proof that the right pathways can open up any number of opportunities for the region’s young talents.

Partodikromo leaves Christchurch for Bramall Lane in Sheffield, South Yorkshire next month to link up with an academy that has produced the likes of Kyle Naughton and Phil Jagielka, who have played for the England U-21 and senior team respectively.

Since 2010 APFA has seen nine players move to professional club academies overseas and ten players offered places in university football programmes.

Thats a big leap for a young lad.

Half the way round the world to Sheffield.

I hope he makes it.

Probably one for Daz, but what happens to the kid now? How do we as a club look after him?

how can we get him when our academy is only class 2 and is supposed to only have a 10 mile catchment area?

When he was at the academy Anders Joa shared house with five other academy players near/at Shirecliffe. Do they have people catering for them maybe?

New Caledonia is a beautiful archipelago of tropical islands, including one group called the Chesterfield Islands.

Poor lad's in for a hell of a shock...

It will be a big culture shock for him - and for the people of Sheffield if he goes clubbing in traditional garb.

They tend to have "foster" homes so to speak - United will pay someone to give them a room at their house. They're obviously checked out beforehand though. Some of them are living in their own student dorm type places too I would imagine, which I'm sure United contribute to in some way.

He'll be part of the U18 set up now, so we'll have to see how he develops. Fingers crossed it proves to be a good gamble.

Thinking about it... I can't wait to have to type that name out when I tweet updates on Foxy's behalf next season!

It's not come into play yet, but that's only for English players as far as I'm aware.

Good move for the club if he makes it ................................ a quid a letter on shirts sales, will make us a fortune. :)

You can hear all the old 'uns on kop calling him Patrick because they can't pronounce his name.... Or won't attempt to!

GARLIC BREAD?

Id imagine there are Dorms set up possibly at the academy?

he'll feel right at home once the new market opens. it'll be just like picking melons on the beach. in beirut.

Apparently he's agreed to join Reading instead now as we only had a verbal agreement. Could be one to keep an eye on over the next few weeks...

If that's his attitude when he's achieved nowt, then b****cks to him. Legal advice being taken (in some cases a verbal contract is as binding as a written one). Don't expect us to win, even though the agreement to join SUFC is on the APFA website.

We will probably get some kind of shitty compo & a % of a transfer if he comes good.

He's playing for the academy I see today...

Up at Shirecliffe at the moment, looks promising.
