Diego and Reed the only players to show any glimpse of quality tonight and Basham was solid. Diego can turn well in the box and his touch is phenomenal, best player at the club technically? Debatable but he's up there. Wasted a little out wide but would struggle with a static midfield upfront as has been previously mentioned. Reed should be encouraged to shoot more only two shots on target I can remember he took. Cold, boring game those who watched It on tv made a good choice...

1, As I said, we create plenty of chances in most games.
2, Our finishing has been terrible.
3, Perhaps we'd put more crosses in given a worthwhile target.
Lionel Messi would look shit playing for us. If he would get a game that is.

Lack of mobility and movement up front is our main problem. The midfielders only options are back or wide, and if they give it wide.not quick enough to get in the box.

Without Murphy or JCR (and on his game Scougall) on the pitch, no one else seems to be able to run at a player and actually commit them. None of the midfielders can play a killer ball (though admittedly there's little movement up front), and none of our players move in between the oppositions defensive and midfield lines. This all leads to us passing side to side until we eventually play a long ball over the top to no one or misplace a pass and give it away.

When we gave it out wide we had Diego, who isn't a wideman and who only ever looked dangerous when coming inside, and Flynny, who only ever really looked to pass it backwards at every given opportunity instead of going at his man.Clueless.

On a brighter note, we got through the game with no injuries or red cards. Clough made no secret of the fact that this competition was his lowest priority. Maybe this was reflected in the performance. If we put in a showing like that against Doncaster, then it's time to worry. But I'm not too worried about us going out of the shitpot trophy.

Walsall played well, btw

Seemed like he couldn't give a fuck before the match.
Got to agree. It's almost as if the coaching staff have sat down and agreed we can't progress in all cup competitions, prioritised those that will generate the most support and income and put out a team with tactics that were likely not to succeed!

How very dare they

Whilst very low on the priority scale last nights match clearly illustrated that the 'fringe' players are just not good enough - Porter, McGinn, Flynn all failed to impress when given the opportunity to show they have a value to the squad.

That is a very good point

They just not worth a wage you could put the young uns up for the bench roles.

Not thought its the players not eager enough to get in the box to support ? Or the players playing poor final balls when we do get in the box ? Or the wingers hitting poor crosses in ? No it must be that bastard Clough.

Its been the same pattern for long enough, agree to a certain extent, players have to take responsibility but Clough is the coach and so should he.

Therein lies the dilemma and the concern. I know there will be some changes to the team for Saturday but the problem with real football (not computer based FM) is that form is not switched on and off, like a tap. Winning is a habit - just as losing becomes a habit and not scoring becomes a habit and that's because it is very much a game of confidence.

Goals change games and lift confidence - enabling players to relax and do the stuff they are good at, naturally. You could see the lift that the Walsall players got after their goal last night. Conversely you could see the effect that had on our players as they started to loft aimless balls into the channels where there were no runners as they couldn't find a gap to pass through the Walsall defence.

Now a lot of people will see a derby game as just the ticket to change the form as they invariably have little to do with current form as players have a different mind set for them - However, our record in derby games over the last 3-4 seasons has been shite. When we have been on form and up against a local rival my overriding perception is that the "underdogs" have performed much better than us (Chessy and Barnsley are prime examples this season - as we fail to convert any pressure into goals when we need them) and when we have been on a downer - we have remained on a downer (Rotherham last season e.g.)

Derby games can be turned with a larger degree of desire and heart - complacency is a huge factor and if we don't match effort and desire or if we degenerate into an attempt at physically out muscling the opposition we will come a cropper, again. We are not built to compete physically so if I were an opposition manager that's exactly what I would attempt to do to bring down the level, knowing that my lads would have more heart and desire to get stuck in and probably nick it.

Can't see any goals in us at the moment from enaywhere and we are so soft at corners it's laughable - Nothing we can do will change that for Saturday unless NC can get a decent loan in - even then it will be a lottery as if they can perform in the day - Bobby Davison's are once in a blue moon

we went 16 games scoring , now its dried up all down to lack of movement, theres no one offering when someones looking to pass , got fed up watching say Reed on the ball looking up and seeing everyone stood alongside a walsall player , and not pulling them one way or the other, ,was very depressing to watch

Spot on - when you consider the movement of Bradshaw before he went off and Manset, when he came on.
Chalk and Cheese
Goal threat - kids stuff
