In light of our upturn in form and renewed optimism around the club I decided now might be nice time to reminisce about the promotion season of 05/06 on youtube. There is a great channel called “Blades History” which has some season reviews and other bits constantly being added. Really enjoyed watching that season although we did make it difficult for ourselves with 8 games to go which is the Blades way I suppose. Although, we weren’t anywhere near being promotion favorites that season. I don’t know if I can bring myself to watch the premier league season yet (well Liverpool and Wigan at home. Anyway as I was watching the promotion season two main things became apparent.

The first is that Monty is a far better footballer than anyone ever seems to give him credit for me included. Yes, he will always be known as a give it all battling defensive midfielder however just watching the season highlights made me realise he is a decent footballer and could pick a pass. I’m therefore ever so sorry that in recent times I have compared him to players such as Johannes Ertl. He was crucial to the way Warnock wanted to play. On a similar note I never held Paul Ifill in great regard however Kabba, Webber etc. wouldn’t have scored anywhere near as many as they did would it not have been for the quality of his crossing. Beckham-esque at times. So another apology from me.

The second thing was the tackles and contact in the game. I often think it’s just us grumpy buggers that say the game is getting softer but it is. It was nice to watch players committing to challenges with their eyes only on the ball. I doubt that a team with Morgan, Shipperly Unsworth would be as effective today with their let’s say physical attributes. The sad thing is this is only ten years ago and the game has changed markedly. I really hope in another ten years we don’t look back again and thing the games got softer

Nothing less than being buggered would be good enough I suspect.....but at least you've shown some contrition, so your session with one of the forum sadists will not extend beyond a few minutes. I hope this is a lesson well learnt, and that you'll take a deep breath before committing hasty judgements to the page.

Monty was indeed better at passing than he gets credit for, it's a part of his game that improved considerably in his last three seasons or so with the club. I remember the Birmingham home game in 2008/09, anyone would've thought he was a playmaker that day.

It's a bit similar with Basham now. Some people say he's a poor technical player when he's nothing of the sort.

Monty was class. Fair enough he couldn't master the 5 yard pass, but he had agreat engine, could tackle and often got some lovely assists that people with agendas seem to forget about
Sorry BML, but I find it difficult to refer to any player who can't pass a ball 5 yards as class.
One or two obvious attributes perhaps (such as the tackling bit) but he was a long way from being a class player in my opinion.

All those players who got us promoted to the Premierhsip have actually achieved something. I don't particularly hold players in high regard unless they do that.

As such, Monty, Jags, Tonge, Shipps, Morgan et al are all remembered fondly by me at least.

If we didn't have a fuckwit for manager who demanded players like Monty were paid silly money to run around with little ability I would agree!

But it's been done to death....Robson and Blackwell.....the two most pathetic, worthless and clueless football managers I can remember!

If he'd been better on the ball he would've played regular Premiership football. As it was, for all his failings, he was still a Championship player and a cut above where we've been for the last few seasons.

If all 11 players plus subs had shown the same commitment as Monty against Burnley in the play off final then we may now be discussing our up and coming Champions League tie rather than a first round FA cup tie against Orient.
Thirteen seconds into the Playoff Final, Monty shinned one to a Burnley player ... the rest is history

No need to apologize, Nick.

You should mention that to the Burnley player who, like countless others before and after him, skipped past our hero as though he wasn't there immediately before the winning goal.

Yep, I thought I'd seen the last of em and we've bottomed out in the shite manager stakes...then along came Adkins.

This "fucking joke" was a regular in the last team that took us into the top flight. On that basis, what language can you find to describe the scores of players who've plied their trade here in the subsequent 9 years of failure?

He was fucking rubbish. Not going to get into a discussion as I'm not going to change my opinion. No real point covering old ground.

Monty the training cone, watching a bunch of infants play football:

Monty The Great ripping Newcastle a new one...

This really does him no favours does it?

A midfield player who has so few career highlights that IT has to be re-hashed every time he's mentioned.
For a stone cold selling club to have a player who they just couldn't make a dime on says all you need to know about him.
