Sort of but it wasnt 4 teams fighting for one promotion place. It was bottom 2 of first division v top 2 of second division for 2 places.
We got relegated through the play offs too, is that counted in there?
In the old format in the 80's, the three teams that finished 3rd, 4th and 5th in the third tier were in a play off with the 3rd bottom team in the 2nd tier for one place in the 2nd tier. We were the 2nd tier team going into our first play off of the modern era, and lost to Bristol City in the semi final. I'd certainly count that as "proper" play off albeit with a slightly different format. It was still four teams, two semi finals and a final, with one promotion place at stake.
Not sure if you can count the 1892/93 as a proper play off though.
