Who thought that we deserved to win last night.

Yes Bennett dropped a clanger which I would not expect from him, but their keeper tipped 3 excellent shots over the bar, saved from point blank and they hacked one off the line not to mention a plethora of other more "straight forward" saves.

all in all, I think it was a fairly decent performance, less hoofball and more patience. I think Blades fans in recent years struggle to accept it when we haven't been world beaters but have been unlucky to lose.

The exceptions being Quinny who was a pap as usual, Robertson who could be one of the worst academy products I've seen in the first team.

Glen Little is top quality if you ask me, everything dried up when he went off and he was at the centre of everything.

My final point is... Why do some Blades feel that weve the god given right to play like Brazil and score 3 goals a game, can't they understand that if we played like they wanted in every game, we'd be the best team in the world, for me, some blades can't understand that it's not the way football works. I do think we have the most fickle fans in the world, some prat sat near me last night was complaining when we were playing a patient passing build up, I bet he complains when we play direct football aswell, what do these people want to watch?? neat and tidy direct football, it doesn't exist!

I think you make a very interesting point Nik. Three of our managers in recent times (Bassett, Warnock and Blackwell) have arguably all preferred the "direct" game. Many of our supporters, since the 1980's, have simply got used to expecting that sort of footy. They are not used to seeing passes strung together and patient build-up.

yer I agree it was a lot better passing game think Howard annoyed me at times though when a pass up front looked best option, for him to pass it back to defence or out to the wings.

Fair point niktheblade.
If their keeper hadn't played so well and a couple of the shots he did well to save ended up in the net we'd probably have come away thinking "well, it wasn't a great game but we never looked in danger and deserved to win". Funny what a couple of missed chances and a goalkeeping blunder can do for you!

That said, Quinn and Howard will still never make a Championship midfield!

I think we started out well, and were running rings around them up until they scored - at which point we lost the plot and ran around like headless chickens for the remainder of the game. The only person in my opinion to come out of the game with any credit was Kyel Reid.

After they went one up Sky did say we should have been three up already.

Hope that Little gets a go in centre with Monty....

i'm just happy we don't have to worry about the mickey mouse cup anymore this season, its just an unwelcome distraction 95% of the time.

poor result yes, but not important in the grand scheme of things.

I have literally never known a team that is so effected by the oppostion scoring a goal... as soon as they scored their first goal we lost all our shape and discipline!!! Then we got it back together with a decent sharp finish and then fell to pieces again when bennet made one of the worst goalkeeping mistakes I have seen in a competitive match...

Only kyel reid, killa and little came out with a little bit of credit!

The bottom line is Port Vale at home is a game we really could and should be winning.

I don't care about all this gibberish about the league being more important, i think good cup runs can also be instrumental in having a good season in terms of confidence and getting the side stringing together some good results

Definitely. You don't start a winning mentality by losing to crap opposition like that.

I didn't go to the game, neither did I listen to it on the radio or even know the starting line-up.Did any fringe players do enough to at least make Blackwell think*?

*I kind of know the answer to this in that it wouldn't matter if certain players turned in a performance like Kaka - Blackwell seems to like those kind of "headaches" as it gives him the opportunity to flex his "I'm the manager, I know best" muscles and drop players completely for the next game.

Not really. Bromby was fairly poor, Bennet made a shocking mistake and was generally not particularly great, Robertson was entirely ineffectual, Sharp started out well but soon lost it... mind you, Little was pretty good, but I can't see him lasting 90 minutes in any match.

However, if - and it's a big if - we can play as well as we did for the first 15 minutes consistently throughout the season, we'll do well.

we did start the game the better side and by the time port vale scored we should have been up by about 3 goals. As mentioned when they did score we lost all our shape and discipline and they grew in confidence.

i completely take the point that their keeper had a storming game, making several good quality saves none more so than the 25 yard shot from sharp that he tipped onto the angle with his little fnger. That said, and fantastic saves apart, the close range "run of the mill" saves he made we should be doing better with. Sharps goal proved that doing it right will beat him and he wasnt superman.

the performance wasnt the best by any means, and although i think that we could have won the game, we didnt. Several of the performances left alot to be desired and although many blades seem to single one or two out, i think that is unfair on many of them and almost lets them off the hook.

BUT, if you are going to screw up, this was the game to do it. Hopefully, lesson learned and we move forward!

I thought we played reasonably well but didn't have much luck.

Thought Little looked absolutely top quality but I am a bit bewildered by the praise being heaped on Reid. I thought he generally did ok but looked a bit lightweight and made some poor decisions. He is only young however and does show some promise.

I thought their number 7 had a storming game and was the best wide player on the pitch.

At the end of the day the game is now behind us so it has to be onward and upwards to Saturday.

True we did deserve the game.

Although we had chances that we should of put of away.

Alot around us tend to shout 'get it in the f**king box' if we put more than three passes together.

Yeah, I get that near where I used to sit. It's annoying - I'd rather see us try and manufacture a move by playing football rather than just see us put no effort in trying to play football and just give it a long ball in to Hendo.
