As lots of people, including me, are missing real football this weekend I wasted some time looking back at our all-time history at the second level.

Well, in reality I only (!) went back to 1893/94 as there were only 22 games in season 1892/93 and I didn't think less than half the current number was a reasonable comparison.

For this comparison I've converted for 3 point wins and extrapolated to 46 game seasons and the result is:-

So, although Hecky's 91 points in 22/23 is the highest actual points second tier season that we have had, it only comes 3rd in our highest equivalent points seasons in what I would term the "modern" era (1893/94 onwards!).

The highest is 93 equivalent points under Reg Freeman in 1952/53 - I was born in September 1953, so it has clearly been downhill all my life!

Wilder's target, therefore, to be our undisputed Tier 2 Legend is 94 points. You can see from the graphs that, in this 8-horse race, jockey Wilder has just moved up from last to 4th with his 4 consecutive wins. Plenty of jumps left before the finish line though!

The two lowest points totals were accumulated by John Harris's team of 1970/71 (84 points) and Harry Basset's team of 1989/90 (85 points) and yet those two teams were capable of remaining in the top flight for 5 seasons and 4 seasons respectively. To have the riches of the Premier league for 4/5 seasons would be very useful today.

As last season began to unfold I just wanted us to keep a clean sheet. If we could have done that more often then there would have been a chance of picking up some 0-0 draws and improving on our 16 points. This season we seemed to have taken that on board.

A great deal has been said by older Blades on here about that 1960/61 defence : -

Hodgy, Coldwell, G. Shaw, Richardson, J. Shaw, G. Summers.

I wonder just how good they were in the 'goals conceded' column. Ceratinly as that defence started to break up we were never able to replace them and that led to relegation in 1968.

To emphasise the importance of 'building from the back' our 2019/20 season in the Premier league saw us in a very respectable 9th place with only 39 goals conceded.

To learn from this - if we are to be promoted this season we must invest in making that defence as good as we can afford. As we know the Premier league can be brutal.

Mostly before my time - but very interesting when you dig into it Graphman.

I noticed that "Jockey Warnock" in 2005/06 was well ahead of the field at about 70 points but had dropped right back by 80 points. Does anybody know if there was a particular reason for this. It reminded me of 2017/18 under Wilder when we were flying until Couttsy broke his leg at Burton and we never recovered.

From my memory (not backed up with facts) Warnock's teams often had a terrible run through February and sometimes early March, no idea why. I suspect that may have also happened in 05/06.

It did, from memory we lost against:

  • Watford (H)
  • Coventry (A)
  • QPR (H)
  • Norwich (A)

The Warnock promotion also started unsustainably well with us winning 12 of our first 13 or something like that.

It was thought at the time that bringing in Akinbiyi in Jan and replacing Shipperley with him led to a downturn in form. We only won 1 out of 8 between early Feb and mid March. Shipperley then game back and we won 4 and drew 3 of the last 7.

It almost certainly did lead to a downturn in form.

However - I maintain that buying someone was essential in that January - Shipperly was getting on and I certainly had concerns about whether he could last the season.

In an alternate universe we buy neither Akinbiyi or Horsfield, and Shipperly picks up an injury at the sty* - and Leeds may very well catch us.

*and of course we possibly don`t win that Derby
