Sheffield United in talks to sign Cardiff City star Smithies

Sheffield United are in talks with Cardiff City over a beat-the-deadline move for Alex Smithies, Football Insider understands.
The 31-year-old is in the final year of his contract and is currently second choice keeper in Mick McCarthy’s side.

Both hopefully, we tried showing them the door but they were unable to hold onto the handle
Personally wouldn't mind seeing Verrips go at all, everyone has a shocker like he did against WB, its happens but I think he'd be better off elsewhere. But if Verrips goes I think we should keep Wes so we have three keepers.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that we're swapping him for McGoldrick as Mick's a big fan, he had him at Ipswich - released by Paul Hurst, and we've got 77 forwards and Didzy's not started well this season. Also he's not really a wide forward and there's other more likely players to fill the centre forward position.

Doesn't like to be away from home ( Nottingham ) so Cardiff doesn't fit

Yeah true but he played for Ipswich for years but maybe more he doesn't want to do that distance again.

Smithies is undoubtedly an upgrade on both WF and MV - he's also a total sh!thouse. I've seen him wind up opposition fans countless times.

If he was coming as back-up to Olsen, I'd say it was a great bit of business but if he's coming as new #1 I'd be less happy

I can't imagine he's coming to be backup as we've already got Wes and Verrips. He was first choice at Cardiff until this season. Maybe we just can't take the risk in waiting to the list minute to see if Olsen signs and then have to go with Wes or Verrips!

been trying to point this out for a while, clubs can agree terms, the player can still turn down the deal, if he doesn't fancy it, its not as easy or as simple as people think, ie just pay the wages, it might be down to moving his family, taking his kids out of school etc, so yes Smithies might be a just in case if Olsen declines, or he might be back up, as was first reported in the press, problem being the reporter knows as much as we do.

Some legs in this to be fair with him losing his place and being from Huddersfield presents an opportunity to move back there. Not an exciting signing but a solid championship keeper and a more proven option than what we've got, which is not a lot.

Do we really want to be signing a keeper that lost his place at fecking Cardiff though.....back up to Olsen yes but surely not first choice.

He'd only be coming as back-up if we managed to get shut of Wes and Verrips in the next 5 hours.

Probably not but as we've already seen with our lack of signings, our stock has fallen massively. If you were a player looking for a move, there are more attractive propositions than Bramall Lane at the moment, promotion looks a very long shot at this point.

We need 3 keepers....send Verrips back to Belgium or wherever he was last season, keep Foderingham and Eastwood goes on loan again...

Just like promotion looked a long shot after the first 5 games under Wilder.....

We don't need 3 senior keepers at this level. Even Wednesday don't have 3 keepers.

Eastwood's gone hasn't he?

Dewsbury is v highly thought of and I envisage us buying time with older loans until such time as he is ready

If we get to 5 loans we could leave asmithe out and pick Cabalero up on a free agent basis for 12 months

Former Cardiff goalkeeper Alex Smithies has joined Leicester City on a free transfer - their first summer signing.

The 32-year-old, who also played for QPR and Huddersfield, has agreed a two-year deal with Brendan Rodgers' side.

Decent move.

Will be 3rd choice at Leicester but he'll get some good coin from it.
