From Wikipedia (points worth noting: alleged drinking culture and lack of discipline; bad start; only one away win in the first season; the rest is history):

Ferguson was appointed manager at Old Trafford on 6 November 1986. He was initially worried that many of the players, such as Norman Whiteside, Paul McGrath and Bryan Robson were drinking too much and was "depressed" by their level of fitness, but he managed to increase the players' discipline and United climbed up the table to finish the season in 11th place, having been 21st (second from bottom) when he took over.
His first game in charge was a 2–0 defeat at underdogs Oxford United on 8 November, followed seven days later by a goalless draw at newly promoted Norwich City, and then his first win (1–0 at home to QPR) on 22 November. Results steadily improved as the season went on, and by the time they recorded what would be their only away win of the league campaign at title challengers and deadly rivals Liverpool on Boxing Day, it was clear that United were on the road to recovery.

In his first eight league games his team's performance was

W3 D3 L2. F10 A9. If Weir had achieved that we'd have 12 points and we probably be sort of satisfied.

Point is?

It took Fergie three years to win a trophy. He was on the verge of getting sacked. Sometimes patience pays off.

I honestly thought we'd stumbled on to the next Fergie when we appointed Weir. It would appear I was wrong.

As I mentioned on another thread last week, there's only 20 odd managers who have been with their current clubs for more than one season. Rightly or wrongly, the days of managers getting time to 'bed in' are long gone.

Unless this run continues, I think Weir is just about safe until they take stock in December before the purse strings are relaxed in January.

Bill Shankly had a terrible start too

KEEP THE FAITH BROTHER!!

Not the case at all:-

"Shankly's work ethic transformed Carlisle who finished 15th in 1948–49 after he had been in charge for only the last few matches. They improved to ninth in 1949–50 and then to third in 1950–51, almost gaining promotion".

This was 10 years before he managed Liverpool.
I.e. He had a good track record and it wasn't a gamble to expect him to continue the trend.

Details, details...

I'm going to save this thread, and when Sir Davey Weir is collecting our 49th trophy, you'll be sorry!
I'm still backing weir but trying to link him to Sir Alex is more than premature.

You could probably find 50 other managers that've failed because of the similarities between the blades culture and the Man U culture pre fergie....

Fair play though brother... I hope you dig this out in April / may and remind us all of this :)

A more pertinent example would be this one...

Martin Peters:-

"Peters retired to take up the manager's job with United 12th in the table with 16 games to play. Winning just three of the remaining games, United were relegated to the Fourth Division and Peters resigned"

Peters first 8 games' record:

P8 W2 D2 L4 F13 A17 pts 8 (actually 6 as it was 2 for a win but you know what I mean).

So Peters is officially twice as good as Weir......

So they were 21st when he took over and 11th by the end of the season?

We were a play off team when Weir took over. And now we're 3rd from bottom? Or am i missing summat?

You knew what I meant... Took him 3 seasons I think to get them promoted before winning 3?? League titles and a Uefa cup.

Don't get me wrong. We're in the doodah!!

I wish people would pack in trying to compare what Alex Ferguson did at Man U back in the Jurasic period, we are in a different time , at a different club, in a different division and crucially with a different manager. Ferguson was already a provan manager with a European trophy under his belt, there was plenty of evidence he would turn it around... The only thing we have seen from Weir is one dimensional pig headedness not to change what is clearly not working... WAKE UP... We are heading for League Two.
