Sounds as though the old lad is in a bad way.
His step daughter has posted a site on Facebook asking Blades to write to him and to like his page.
Foxy get this forum liking it and all Blades out there who saw him play , let the Lane God of football know how dear he is to all of us

Keep this at the top until all of us oldies have helped reach 1000 on the facebook page.

For me the best footballer I have seen in the red and white stripes. A real legend.

i dont do face book but if someone can wall him and wish him well from me it would be appreciated.
and i agree with wardlow,a TRUE legend for SUFC.
deserving of a statue at least.

About a year ago my mate went to tulsa usa on a training course through work, (he's a leeds fan by the way) and was sat in a bar talking to the bartender about football, (or soccer) and it came up in conversation about the great alan woodward and that he would be coming down for a few pints, being a leeds fan, my mate had never heard of him so he rang me at about 11pm on sunday night to ask me who he was.. to cut a long storey short, the next call i got (at around half past midnight) was from the great man himself amd we chatted for about 20 mins about football, the state of the UK, and Geoff Sammons as hed recently been in thr UK to attend a funeral. He was jeovial and talkative and it completely made my night (after explaining to the wife, the importance of the call at this hour on a monday morning) he also sent me a blades shirt signed by TC and himself and also signed me a shirt from St Georges bar where he frequents. I tried to upload a photo but for some reason it wont let me, but basically my point is the man is a legend and a humble, generoud legend at that! The type you and i will probably never see the likes of again!

Or

Alan Woody, Woody, Woody, Woody, Woodward on the wing, on the wing

The man was a genius, along with Lorimer the hardest striker of a ball ever in recent times and so far as I know the player with the most goals direct from a corner kick. (Darren how many?)

I think he got two direct from a corner against Coventry in the same game?

So many happy memories of Woody from his time at the Lane. I even used to bump into him on Myrtle Road after coming out of the "Roundhouse" after a session on the Wards! :D

We have somewhere a page out of the Shoot showing his corner prowess. We'll see if we can scan it and get it up here.

Get well soon Woody!

:)

His son was in the year above me at school. Get well soon woody

It would be great if we sang that today. He was my first hero and when you all said who you wanted to be when you played football, I was always Alan Woodward.

I named my fist pet after the great man. Woody that is. A rabbit called Alan, now that would be silly. So therefore Woody is in my rude film star name. I am not sure that is a fitting tribute for the one man that made me a Blade. When I was about 8 I went to my first game. He was noticeable because of his grey hair. But that was not the reason why I could not keep my eyes off him. Strong, calm, and with a shot on him like a thunderbolt.......from a corner!

Get well soon Alan, sir, a man, a legend, and a Blade.

We should name a corner in his honour at the Lane. It would be good to do that for someone who is still here to hear about it. True hero.

On a school trip in the sixties around the dressing rooms under the old John St stand , I saw Woodward cleaning his boots after a practice session and was taken aback at close range the size of his thighs, made Schwarzenegger look a weed, no wonder he could thump a ball.
Never forget his net ripper at West Ham and the thunderbolt free kick at Coventry, but his 4 v Ipswich in the 7-0 and goals in a 5-1 wins at pompey and Cardiff stand out.
I also remember the media bias against us being highlighted by Woodward
He scored direct from a corner at Leicester and Kenneth WUSSIETENHOLM said quote oh what a lucky goal , a week later George Best fluked one and his comment , oh the sheer genius of the guy, bias beyond belief

I believe he also scored straight from the corner against Newcastle in the league cup, a night match If I rememeber correctly. The BBC Match of the Day video series featured loads of Woody goals.

Get well soon Woody

The best player England never had.

I remember him getting picked for England B, and refused!!! Mick Speight was called up instead.

He was a real Blades legend and I cannot understand why he hasn't got an avatar on this site.
When we have had discussions about who should be included I have always put Woodward forward - His absence makes the inclusion of the avatar of Alan Cork last season look ridiculous.

I don't do FaceAche either but I wish woody all the best

Woody was over from Tulsa years ago and Graham Shaw asked if he'd come and do our football presentation night, he was brilliant and stopped all night. He was a legend to me as a young un and even more a legend after that night, I got a woodward legend picture from the lane for xmas and its in pride of place in my study. Hope he's ok

I think what makes Woody so special to us who saw him was he had a shot like a cannonball, was a good goalscorer, was local, spent all his time in the FL at one club and obviously had his shortcomings. He was brilliant but one of us. Contrast him to somebody like Bellamy and its like chalk and cheese.

At the time the papers stated that the reason for alan not going on the B tour was that "he had already booked a family holiday"
