Ever since I've had a season ticket we've been a tippy tappying it outside the box sort of team and or trying to just walk it into the net.

I even remember it being the case over 10 years ago in the Blackwell days.

I've been very frustrated indeed for all of this time! I know we haven't got world class players but surely Premier League players don't need to be of that level to be very direct - I don't mean this in a hoofing sense but a more incisive/keeping the momentum flowing/less faffing about sense.

He forgot to mention that when Baldock did get the chance two or three times to cross the ball,it sailed over the lot of em waiting in the box.

This is spot on we aren’t nasty enough currently we lack flecks horrible streak standing on toes studs down the back of heels he’s Michael brown esc at times. Plus O’Connell is just scary and it’s not only in terms of intimidating the opposition but our own team I’m not saying any of our players enjoy losing but there isn’t that aggression towards our own lads to do better either.

Yes but in fairness, we've done it in every successful season and match in this system under Wilder.
It's not like we're just neshing getting it in the box, we do recycle and recycle, looking for the overlap or underlap (as Bash does constantly) into the box.

It's driven us all mad at times but it's brought a hell of a lot of success. We can't pretend we've just noticed and that's what's wrong because results are poor and they've stated the bleedin obvious on MOTD.

Having said all that, I think now might be a decent time to keep doing what we do but fling it in a bit earlier yes!

I think most fans with a knowledgeable grasp on the game knows where the problem is. At times we can play just as good as any other team in the league but we just can't score, if we got 1 win if it be scrappy, decisive or bounces off somebody's arse and goes in it would kick start us off. Obviously everyone will say we've signed the strikers etc and to be honest I don't think anyone can say they don't try their arse off for the team, it's just not working at the moment and we're all frustrated. All the chances we had yesterday to put the ball in, any sort of knick could have took it past their goalie, nobody wants to risk giving up a good chance because of the form we are in. Even though the table doesn't lie I am still defiant we can stay up, we just need any sort of luck and a spark. Most of the matches have obviously been disappointing but you've got to take solace in the fact nobody has took the piss, it doesn't help when you've got one point but fortunes have got to change at some point. Roll on the next few matches I just hope we give everything, win lose or draw. UTB!

If the opposition know we won’t try and create centrally, then they can safely spread men wide to throttle our supply line. That’s why the system doesn’t work anything like as well without a ‘Duffy’. If we had someone hovering just outside the 18 yard box, they can’t just toss the kitchen sink at our attempted overloads, otherwise you’re leaving someone unmarked in a dangerous position. Also, the 10 provided another option if the cross is isn’t on. Now, if it isn’t on we have no choice but to go backwards or overplay to try and create an angle.

Just watched it this morning and thought exactly the same.
Also hope our forwards do verbalise it in the dressing room like Lineker said him and Shearer would.

The thing that annoys me most is while we dilly dally out wide more and more of our players drift wide to help try and create an opening. Then on almost every occasion when the ball is eventually cleared we have no one central and the opposition have an easy run straight at our defence.

I also can't fathom how bad we are at crossing. There's players in league one that can consistently put a ball into a decent area. The majority of our crosses either fly over everyones head or go straight to the keeper. Just make the defence defend something ffs.

Crossing early will more often than not concede possession and leave us open to the counter. So possibly better to retain the ball and try to engineer a chance rather than a half or quarter chance. But we overdid it yesterday.

If we put good crosses into the box we will score more goals, no doubt about it.

And on your specific point about leaving ourselves open to the counter that is exactly what we do by overplaying it. There were several occasions yesterday when we ended up with 3 or 4 of our players fannying about with the ball out wide, before a wayward 10 yard pass put City in on the counter. We constantly overload out wide and it comes to nothing. It’s madness.

Totally agree with Shearer. As a defender if you know the ball isnt coming in then it's so much easier to set up against. No panic in the back line.

Even a few early miss-hit crosses can be useful as it puts you on edge knowing you might get turned around or you need to be aware of where the strikers are around you. Keeps your attention constantly split between the ball and the attackers.

Makes sense to not just lob it into the box everytime and to make clear crossing opportunities but if we keep recycling over and over gradually more and more of our players drift over and empty the middle leaving us open to being countered. If the ball is earlier then we haven't already emptied the middle and arent open to counters EVERY time.

Waiting to find the perfect chance was a good strategy in The Championship and L1, where, generally speaking we could dominate possession and knew that plenty of chances would come, if we were to wait.

The Premier League is a totally different proposition. We spend long periods of the game without the ball. Even against sides like Fulham, we are not controlling possession; therefore when we do have the ball, we need to move it faster. It’s highly unlikely that we are going to find Man City slip up with their defensive shape, so we can find the perfect ball.

To be perfectly honest at this moment in time, I’d prefer us to play “hoof ball” than all this unnecessary pissy-passy stuff on the touch line. Do the team or the coaching staff not realise that this is exactly where the opposition want us to play our football. It’s obvious teams counter our play by leading us down the touch line to an eventual dead end. From being hard to figure out last season, we are the easiest team to defend against this season.

The funny thing about it was that they were saying we should cross earlier with first touches, but on the last clip, after about 10 little passes when there was a decent chance to put the ball in, it ended with a tame first-time cross straight along the floor to the nearest defender without even looking.

Baldock is terrible for that kind of thing, when he's on the counter and can see what options are on he ignores them, stops running and looks for a short pass, but then when he can't see what's on in the middle, instead of taking the extra touch or a short pass, he'll just cross it to nobody without even looking. Osborne was doing the same yesterday, just throwing possession away when he should have held on to it. The whole mentality is the wrong way around.
