Definitely a failed/expensive experiment. Recruitment equals
Scouting, seeing, watching, assessing. Finally gut feeling.
Science and Stats come when the above has been completed.

“ … transfer policy effectively overseen by self-styled data guru James Bord … a remarkable and disastrous chapter in United’s history that will not be looked back on with much fondness by anyone”.

Read ‘em and weep, porcine friends.

Though I’m not entirely convinced Matos was a data-led signing. He’d obvs been around in English football for quite some time.

I don’t mind the idea behind it to find hidden gems in other leagues, but we didn’t half waste our oversees slots on shite and it couldn’t been utilised so much more effectively.

We were identifying players who were in leagues no better than the National League at best, if we’d have aimed a bit higher in the Dutch, French, or Belgian leagues or somewhere where there is a decent standard, then it might have been a different story.

Zätterström is the one that interests me, as he was apparently an AI signing for decent money and has played at international level and in the Champions League.

Sounds like Zatterstrom will stay then. He's probably the only one with any pedigree so worth trying to develop.

Hope Bord can take the other 3 to Wednesday. They can have Matos too.

No one who knows the game could have ever thought that signing players in this way would be successful. Even those willing to give it a chance we're doing so in the hope of unearthing a gem, rather than any expectation of resilts. There is so much more to signing a player than just stats, you need to watch a player to see their impact on a game. Their character, leadership, personality, style of play etc. all need to be taken into account and these things are often not measurable. The problem is though, we have a board that clearly don't know the game. It makes you wonder if they have American Football fans amongst them. There's a sport where players are often selected on how fast they can run, how big they are, or how high they can jump.

It seems the board (although we never hear from them), have accepted that it was naive, so at least that's good news. With the Wilder U-turn they do seem to learn pretty quickly and hold their hands up. They've got off very lightly by the fans in my opinion, and that's largely due to them admitting the mistakes (and Wilder managing to turn things around for them).

You could use it the opposite way round, using AI to find players who scouts should go and see and assess. Maybe that would find players who wouldn't be viewed in the first place.
But it certainly can't be used just on its own, or the main decider.
Scrapping the whole thing would be a knee jerk reaction, other clubs have used data analytics properly and been successful as a result. Use it as an extra tool.

Ah yes, Champions League.

90% of the games in the full Champions League competition are between tinpot shite teams who’d get a pasting against mid Championship teams.

I read very little on any player who “has experience of playing in Europe”.

"[W]e're filling up slots with players anyone with a functioning cerebral cortex knows will never contribute to the first team, preventing us from signing players we might need."

^ a very smart poster over the Summer.

I would love to know the data that thought tiny matos was a like for like for Souza.

Absolutely bonkers.
Tackling stats I’d imagine. He was a fit for Selles Reading side in fairness but unfortunately that looks like lightning in a bottle now rather than a repeatable system. He doesn’t fit for Wilder at all though who wants a lot more on the ball from his CM’s

Who signed Tanganga I wonder because that signing definitely improved us. I was skeptical on the foreign AI signings because it seemed a gamble and lead by an ex professional poker player. I feel too for the players because they were playing regular football and now are left with no prospect of football unless a move transpires.

I do hope we move away from the AI recruitment model because you've got to put some serious money and time into a successful recruitment model like what Brentford and Brighton have done.

Thought it was a player from Saudi league at first with the thread title.

Yeah wilder knows the score, these lads are not good enough, gambles not paid out. I do also feel wilder said when he first came back was he would on condition james bord has nothing to do with us, no coincidence that since Wilder came back hes been distanced from the club and influenced less & less.

Thing is its not a bad thing to have 1 hand in, but not fully dive into like we did.

As you say you need the better more expensive versions and them ones we be shopping in same ponds as Brightons, Brentford, Bournemouth etc and until we are established instead prem we have no chance of competing for those same younger players.

People talk about signing hidden gems seem to think that those players will be immediately ready to play top level Championship football and play consistently well. I don't think that will ever happen. To me we should be signing younger players with talent but who also show the ability to learn and be coached. Essentially what we have been pretty successful at with our Academy. The alternative is doing what Forest have with Binden. Signed him from Reading for £1m and loaned him straight back, then moved him onto us, to play at a higher level. He might never play for them but I don't think they will lose money on him. It is interesting to see that Jamal Baptiste is getting some goo seemingly doing quite well in a terrible Rotherham side.

Find it weird how people think Matos is only a League One player when he's had two decent half seasons in the Championship before this. He wasn't what we needed earlier in the season when we were playing as 11 individuals rather than a team and he's been anonymous at best when used as a sub, but even if it's not here, he'll find somewhere at this level where he can make a career of it.

I think it has something to do with his lack of footballing availability. I wouldnt say he was decent for 2 season in championship either. Hes had 19 & 20 games for two poor teams in the bottom, which he was hardly inspiring for either.

Time will tell I suppose, but hes definitely not a starter of any chamionship team in top 10.

I don't believe Matos was an AI signing. He came when the panic signings started at the end of the window after Bord had been dumped. Bord was a complete disaster don't get me wrong, literally all his recommendations were abysmal, but I don't think we can say the entire window was down to him. Without him and his shit experiment though though we'd have likely got in the likes of McBurnie through the door before he went to Hull

I saw Baptiste in the u21s with Nwachukwu and Mihail Polendakov also playing and what stood out right away was his was built like a brick shithouse compared to the majority of our other players that day.

He was let go by West Ham but I think it was not because of his ability but discipline off field. He has played England U19s. Loan out was before Wilder returned
