Aware the AGM happened this morning, anyone willing to share anything?
Only thing I've been told is we are 60% of financial fair play rules

The only thing I heard from someone who went, was that he was happy with the meeting and that there is no money for players in the transfer window. Thought that was a bit of a contradiction in terms. Can anyone who went expand?

I was told from someone who went that they was no money for transfer fees but some flexibility for loans.

Rather than type stuff in again SJH and I typed our notes into the following Mad thread. The meeting lasted about 1.5 hours, most of which was Q & A so a lot was covered although you won't be surprised by much of the content. Interesting all the same.

Posts 11 and 20.

Cheers for that - all pretty much as expected. Although Bergen will be interested to know Tonne is seemingly a proper old lazy arse. :)

For the lazy :) Thanks UnitedBlade

Just back so here is a brief report as promised.

Danny attended the Q & A which made it more interesting:

One theme was that United cut back on backroom staff so that they could maintain standards at the Academy.

Academy is Catagory 2 which is good because only 6 (Premiership Clubs) are C1.

It means our youngsters from U12 upwards can play the likes of Forest, Leeds. Boro and even Weds instead of League 1 & 2 Clubs.

It also means it is more difficult for Clubs to poach our players and we get compensation if they do. Both Manchester Clubs concentrating heavily on Sheffield so this protection is important.

Unsworth is now coaching at the Academy. KM asked shareholders attending to raise their arms if they had been to Shirecliffe. Only about 1/3 did so. He urged more people to go down and look.

Someone asked why we never practice corners or penalties. Danny said this was not the case but added that however much you practice you cannot replicate the match day atmosphere and match experience. He cited the example of a player who had been practicing corners last Tuesday and could not deliver one above ankle height. The same player then ballooned a penalty over the bar at Coventry!

He added that in a shootout the first and fourth penalties were always the most important.

KM said he thought it was wrong after 42 games to settle a playoff by pens especially when it got down to the goalies taking them. He suggested that if it was level after ET the team who finished highest in the League should go up.

In response to a point that we were not scoring enough goals this season Danny said that Ched had been playing so well that we could not afford to replace with a player of the same calibre.

Re goals from midfield he said Doyle was a specialist in his role and not necessarily expected to score but McD was an offensive midfielder who should score. They have been working on this and he had a few chances and looked likely to score last Sat before he got injued.

Re injuries - McD recovering really well but not in time for today. LJF and Howard should be back in Jan.

Elliot Whitehouse is an incredible prospect. So keen he had been playing with a foot injury he didn't tell anyone about. When it came to light the X Ray revealed a broken bone but he should be ready in the New Year. Danny rates him very highly.

He said because of the number of good senior players it wasn't always possible for the lads to be first team starters but just being on the bench gave them a good feel for the first team experience and standards expected on and off the pitch.

Eric Tonne came back from loanand was miles away in terms of fitness standards and he still is. May send him on loan again. Philliskirk has been unlucky but may also go on loan for experience.

Some discussion of football salary protocol. Must be less than 65% of budgeted turnover but if it exceeds 60% the FA have to micromanage all deals which can cause delays so better not to exceed in case we need emergency loans.

Danny was asked if he would ever sign a player just from video footage. He replied yes, he would probably sign Messi without having seen him live. KM thought this might blow the wages budget.

Danny left after a very interesting and frank discussion. Meeting continued without him.

Jacob Esan was in attendance on the top table. KM explained that Nigeria was a mega wealthy country due to oil. The idea was to invest in the Scarborough United group anf filter some of this down to the football Club.

Freehold had been transfered in case an investor wanted to make a pure football investment but not acquire the Ground or Academy sites. Rent could be charged commensurate with league we were in.

Also some good young Nigerian players that we might attract.

Last question was for Mr Essan - could he sing the Greasy Chip Butty Song. The meeting closed to much laughter (including from Mr Essan).

Not had time to check this becuase late for match. I know I will have missed bits and apologise for grammatical errors. Maybe others who went can fill in missing gaps.

SJH has covered most of the main points – great stuff !

There are a couple of areas I noted that I think are worth sharing.

INVESTMENT

On investment / getting back to the Premier League, McCabe outlined 2 approaches:

a)The Academy approach where our academy investment pays off and we emulate the Norwich / Southampton / WBA model in getting back because we develop top class young talent

b)The Billionaire route

He stressed that SUFC would only be sold to someone who would care and look after the club, its supporters and the local community. We will not be sold as some rich person’s toy – beware Portsmouth, look what happened when they were sold to the wrong people.

He did cover the $500M Scarborough United Group investment. He reiterated what we already know in that Nigeria is rich in minerals and is forecast to grow rapidly. He made it clear that this is primarily Real Estate but they will look to funnel some funds to SUFC. Jacob Esan is an Investment Banker and that is what he is doing with Nigerian institutions. If he’s successful the funds will be secured around the middle of next year.

Scott McCabe now seems to have the responsibility for wider investment opportunities. Very interestingly, SUFC has been approached by 2 potential investors recently: one Scott has already met and has a track record in football. And next week he is meeting someone else in Europe. Obviously, any details are confidential but I was surprised that there is current interest and KM was quite candid about it. Of course this might lead nowhere.

WHU MONIES

McCabe confirmed WHU are paying on time and the final payments will be January and August 2013. He said he thought £6.5M is outstanding (it was £8.5M when the accounts were drawn up). This just removes the Santander debt and doesn’t count towards turnover (and hence SCMP wages).

SCMP etc

All clubs are heavily audited and everyone had to submit their latest forecasts last Friday in readiness for the January window. Craig Burns does all this and he said we are close to 60% of turnover – if you go over that limit you are heavily scrutinised but not penalised until you hit 65%. Given we don’t know if / when / where injuries might hit, this is sensible in my view.

ACADEMY

Simon McCabe has responsibility for this and as SJH mentioned we’ve invested further in coaching staff for the academy. He talked about the key role John Stephenson has. Stephenson met with McCabe and Esan to get contacts for Nigerian footballing talent. They are quite clear that work permits might be difficult and some players might have to spend 3 years in Belgium before coming to the club. Yes we haven’t had success with this previously but in my view it’s worth exploring again.

WHAT WOULD DANNY WILSON LIKE IN THE JTW

-Wide areas
-Central midfield (as proven again today our Achilles heel)
-Maybe another striker (“you can never have enough, they win games”)

Do not take this as us having funds, he was responding to a question about where we had weaknesses.

In general Danny was very honest with his answers and actually quite entertaining with his quips.

Many thanks for that Highbury.

As always it reads well.

The hearts and vision appear to be in the right the right places but the big question, as ever, is can we deliver?

Particularly good news re the academy for the long term future of the club.

Completely irrelevant comment Kevin, we all know the rules at the start of the season, it is no good blubbing because we were not good enough. If you really want to do something about it get stuck into the FA!
Eric Tonne came back from loan and was miles away in terms of fitness standards and he still is. May send him on loan again.
Get rid, if he isn’t good enough or fit enough after how long? Lets free up his wages to use on someone who will challenge the first team squad.

Tune is changing from the £500 million investment that was trumpeted to distract from the sale of Stephen Quinn“filtering some down” Big Kev’s transfer window smokescreen at work again.
Freehold had been transfered in case an investor wanted to make a pure football investment but not acquire the Ground or Academy sites. Rent could be charged commensurate with league we were in.
It astounds me that there has not been a major reaction to this, where is BB when you need him! What investor in their right mind is going to put money into a football club in the third tier with an average squad and no ground! Does KM think we are idiots? As with the Hotel there seems to have some neat accounting moves to transfer the assets to the McCabe empire.
Also some good young Nigerian players that we might attract.

Did nobody ask KM how this could possibly happen when he sells all of the young talent at the first sniff of an offer?
b)The Billionaire route
He stressed that SUFC would only be sold to someone who would care and look after the club, its supporters and the local community. We will not be sold as some rich person’s toy – beware Portsmouth, look what happened when they were sold to the wrong people.Isn’t that what it is at the moment? We are apparently £50 million quid in debt with no prospect of recovering, we no longer own the ground and the quality of our squad is declining at an alarming rate. Sorry Mr McCabe, but we wouldn’t appear to be radically different from Pompey.

I hate the Americanism but that aside, smoke screen, there are no funds so why make this song and dance until you have secured them!

Surprisingly £500 Million pounds is not confidential but the mystery takeover is. I would change the “might” to will.

Not entirely irrelevant though is it??? You can disagree with the rules whilst playing within the,. And let's face it the ET period would have been waaaaaaay more interesting, if not nerve wracking, if Hudds had known there was no fallback to penalties...

Fair point SellyOak, I do think the play offs should have some kind of tilt towards the team that has actually finished higher in the league, my point was more that McCabe can't blame the play off system for our current position.

THREAD HIJACK ALERT Sorry Foxy and Linz and all but can"t start a new thread
Hillsborough The WHOLE Truth

A petition has been started to support the whole story of Hillsborough being told. Sadly everything seems to be very one-sided at the moment and the new enquiry announced by the Home Secretary specifically excludes events leading up to the opening of the gates at the Leppings Lane End just after 3.00pm on that dreadful day. We believe that the memory of the 96 innocent victims will be better served if the WHOLE story comes out, should you be able to spare a few minutes please add your support. It is:
