Adkins' signings record

There's a lot been said about Adkins' signings whilst he's been here and whether he should be trusted with summer recruitment. I decided to have a quick look over his signings at Southampton and Scunthorpe to try to see if he had a good record.

His record at Southampton wasn't sparkling. He didn't really unearth gems who went on to great things. He signed some decent players who did quite well though (Hooiveld, Chaplow, do Prado, Cork etc.). Nathaniel Clyne was probably his best signing.

His record at Scunthorpe is quite good with the likes of Paterson, Hooper, Woolford (I know but he did well for them), Rob Jones, Grant McCann, Liam Trotter on loan etc. But he did also sign Jonathan Forte (for both clubs!).

It looks like he brought in quite a few in the summer of 2008 following relegation at Scunthorpe and on the whole, was quite successful taking them up through the playoffs.

He'll have an even bigger rebuild this summer. Let's hope he's up to the task.
 



He didn't really need to sign too many at Saints because Pardew had already assembled a decent squad and they had some quality coming through the youth team.

How many of Bassett's signings did anything after they left us? Deansy, Pembo Jonesy and Bees are the only ones that I can recall. The rest ended up back on their fruit and veg stalls.

Alan Kelly and Carl Bradshaw also had decent careers in the top flight after leaving us.
I agree with the general point though. Bassett's teams were always greater than the sum of their parts.

Nathan Blake had a good career post United. So did Clive Mendonca both times after Bassett sold him.

Chris Marsden also did well, but only after 12 or so years as a journeyman.

Both Blake and Mendonca were second tier players though. Blakey played a bit in the top league but it seemed always for clubs that got relegated. Like Bent, he was good in the second tier but poor at the level above.

It's not like signing Clyne who's gone on to play for Liverpool and England or Deansy who played for England and in the CL.

heard an interview with him a year or two ago, he didn't seem to have a fondness for Sheffield United. Not surprising I suppose, the way he was treated by Kendall.

But which ones have been consistently crap? Even Wooly broke up his periods of crapness with a couple of decent games.
The problem seems to be getting 9 or 10 to have good games more often. You can carry a poor performance or two if the rest are doing well but if three or four have a bad day, you're fucked. We have two many times when three or four have bad games but they're not always the same three or four.
If that makes sense.

No, but it's also not like being back on the fruit and veg stall as you described it. They both had decent careers.
