At what point does optimism, in the harsh face of reality become dillusional? Can't fault his optomism, but it just doesn't seem to match the reality of my perception.

Normally i'd agree, but El Collo has gone to be rowdy elsewhere and life is seeming a lot better.

You can either give up, or make the most of the situation.

The manager's first job is to optimise the peformance of the team - and ideally the club, not provide the ultimate insider's, fly-on-the-wall account and assessment what's going on.

Adkins style is, amongst other things, to talk up his players. *Generally* evidence indicates that is the best way.

(This is why imo it was ridiculous to ridicule Wenger for "not seeing" incidents.)

We must be absolute world beaters on the training pitch.

I think he's alluded to this (a lot) more than once.:-)

Saw Clough on some Soccer AM style programme recently nothing in depth but he talked about one of the main problems as a manager is that players don't do what they're supposed to.

What's the difference then? Is it the pressure of a real game? Or is it the fact that we are playing against another team and not eachother o_O

.... Because if we train by playing attack against defence (is that still a thing?) then players like Sharp must make our captain look pretty daft most days.

"Train like it means everything when it means nothing and play like it means nothing when it means everything."

I think, as Jeeves might venture, it's the psychology of the individual.

It's not even as simple/simplistic as pressure bc some players will relish the opportunity, some will freeze - and all reactions inbetween.

Ultimately I think you just have to assess "in the arena" - and it sounds like a few of our players can't reproduce their training form on match days.

Seems clear Adkins knows who they are.

A big part of SAF's recruitment was not just skill, but mindset.

Interesting debate over Newcastle on Sky. All of the professionals - all of whom played at the top level - are of the opinion that some Newcastle players simply aren't giving it their all. (Not one has suggested the players aren't good enough).

Same view as many on here about United, which some dispute as nonsense.

No one has blamed the fans either for the position they are in.

Food for thought?
