Adkins' interview is online now:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p039zzhd
  • Adkins strong on discipline, has expectations of the players and Baxter has fallen short of those
  • "Incident" investigated, disciplinary action taken and that's the end of the matter
  • Came off injured against Shrewsbury and was injured for Barnsley
  • Baxter playing well this season - pivotal figure in the team
  • Needs to understand the consequences of his actions but he's still part of the plans
  • Consistent off-field issues may lead to Baxter's future being elsewhere: "time will tell"
On other issues
  • thought there was desire shown against Barnsley - looked for and got a reaction there
  • talks about the "history and beauty" of the FA Cup
  • "not going to be an easy game"
  • current league position "hurts" but it's "only been a short tenure"
  • wants to provide an environment for players to play well
  • squad too big; players should want to play
  • injuries have reduced players' impact so far but that's improving (namechecks Brayford)
  • sidesteps naming individual players but there's definitely movement behind the scenes "need to get the squad to the right size" and provide a "stepping stone for the young players"

I'd put a wager that he's gone in January..

Adkins or Baxter?

Baxter, contracts up in the summer. I don't think the management and hierarchy are too fond. Sheffield United are primarily a business, think this negative press is too far. Probably won't officially come out what happened, but the club will was their hands I would imagine. I don't think there's a strong enough argument to keep, a few great passes here and there, hardly the next fucking Michael Brown.

Other than the Baxter situation, 12 minutes of waffle which he has said in every other interview. Great in training allegedly can't replicate it on match day, need to see a lot more from NA other than the talk for me.
Yup fell asleep half way through that load of bollocks.

That excuse doesn't convince my sexual partners, so I'm not going to let it wash about my football team, etc etc

Fairweather players who only do well in training is exactly what we don't need, I hope that Adkins saying this in interviews is him suggesting that he will get rid of such players. I live in hope.

Exemplary interview from a very articulate and knowledgeable manager. He treats us, the audience, with respect and says as much as he can.

Everything he says to us via the media is tempered, but of course Baxter is reaching last chance saloon with us, regrettable but maybe inevitable, unless he actually does grow up before he blows his career.

As regards the rest of the squad, I think Adkins has reached an important stage and now knows what's what and who's who. I also suspect he has grown a couple of horns for quite a few players, including Baxter, who thought he was "an arm around sort of bloke". If he hasn't then he may have problems; if he has then we might be O.K.

The next 6 weeks will determine Adkins' future with us and that is real pressure on him. If he handles it well then we will all benefit from it.

I have to say his interviews are the best from any manager since Bassett. The man talks absolute common sense and displays his knowledge of the game. It's what he says to the players and how they receive it, which matters much more though.

I often wonder what the point of these interviews are. Jonathon was asking the questions that supporters wanted to know but, you will never get the facts revealed by the club manager/spokesman which I suppose is understandable, they have to support the players. What's this word desire he keeps mentioning ?, he might know but the players don't. Oh and one more thing Nige, I know a lot of us have serious doubts about it, but I think we don't have to keep being told that we are a football club.

Good post. This is pretty much exactly what I get from his interviews too.

Baxter will be history in January.

Redknapp said recently that the better, more valuable players inevitably get more latitude, lee-way than lesser players. A club will sack one lesser player for the very same transgressions that a player worth a transfer fee gets away with.

Opinions on here vary whether Baxter has sublime talents and a value as a player.

I think he needs psychiatric help probably. Good job he's not really good looking, athletic body and intelligent with a ready wit, otherwise he might get carried away with himself !!

Very good! Theres wankers and liars Olly!

Hope? I prefer Castleton myself.......

I have to say, I think Adkins is giving far too much credit to Baxter in describing his performances as "pivotal".
Given that Baxters performances early on in the season were utter dogshit and he was amongst the worst offenders in a very bad team, his admittedly much improved displays of late don't warrant the term "pivotal". I call it "fulfilling your job description".

From the OS about team news from Saturday. Typical United, don't even mention Baxter. Is he injured or suspended ? The "end of the matter" but they can't even tell their supporters via their official channel what the status is. Really poor.

"David Edgar (unspecified) and Jamal Campbell-Ryce (hamstring) are both rated as doubtful having limped out of the action in last Saturday's draw at Barnsley. Elsewhere, Stefan Scougall, Ryan Flynn and James Wallace all of whom missed out against the Tykes aren't expected to return to face the Latics, although Che Adams is amongst those pushing for a recall."

Judging by the results and performances the players don't receive it well or they are incapable of implementing what he requires of them. He has identified in his interviews more or less from day one what he wants yet 20 league games in we are still seeing the same shortcomings. We didn't employ him to give a good interview we wanted a manager who could win games of football, a phrase NA repeats religiously but as yet can't deliver..

Sounds to me like Baxter will be gone, sounded like Adkins was the end of his tether with Jose. I was expecting Adkins to say a direct "Yes" when asked if Baxter is still part of his plans and all he says is "He's still at the football club, yeah" not in the most confident of tones.

He says he wants to create more opportunity for the U21's to come through. That suggests he is looking to offload a good number of senior players to me.

Surely our inability to win a game of football, to put it in one end and keep it out at the other, is a good enough opportunity for the U21s. Either they're good enough or they're not, I don't necessarily mean Satdi/Tuesday but if you want to give them an opportunity, play them. Not one of our first team can say with honesty they don't deserve to be dropped.

And to be pragmatic, our first priority is to get promoted, bringing the kids through is a 'would like' not a 'must have'. I wonder who's been in his ear saying we need to play more academy players?

It was pivotal in helping Shrewsbury to beat us.

With our chances of promotion fading this season has to be seen as a rebuilding exercise in preparation for next season. Baxter and a few others should not feature in our long term plans. Lack of ability, effort or positive attitude (that covers most of them) should not be tolerated.
We need to see if some of the kids are ready to step up and we need to get rid of the dead wood when contracts expire in the summer.
Time to turn the Surrender Monkey Stadium back into Fortress Bramall Lane

Adkins has already made a number of big errors.

First one was to not remedy the obvious problems at the back. The fact Collins is still in the team is damning of either his view of what a centre half looks like or the research he did on our performances last season.

Second one was not to get a leader and rock hard central midfielder in during the summer

Third one was too shell out too much in wages on players who are at the end of their career or simply not good enough (Sharp, Woolford, Sammon)

I don't think the board have the stomach for a change...and neither should they...yet....he will ive or die by his dealings in January and where we finish at the end of the season.

So far the evidence isn't good, hes transformed a play off team into a mid table team whilst increasing the wage bill substantially!!

Personally I just wish we could get shut of the fucking lot egos, wage bill, wank players the lot! And start a bastard again

Yes LS26, that is what a lot of us have been calling for, obviously we won't get shut of the lot, but let's hope there are quite few come the end of January.

And to be fair Crucial, I imagine NA knows exactly who he wants to keep and who he wants to 'move on'. However he's not going to come out and say he's crap, he's crap etc as some fans might want as he has these players for another month at least and if he can't get them out on loan or sold then he has them till the end of their contract a lot of which is June 2016.
