Fortunate enough to have had a very interesting (if a bit brief) conversation with one of our up and coming youngsters over easter. Very articulate lad who was refreshingly open about things.

Asked him about the inconsistency and he put that squarely down to the players. Was very complimentary about Adkins methods, his preparation and his long term plans. Said it had taken longer for them to adapt than it should have, but that the whole group (management and players) feel they are very close to it clicking, at which point he thinks we'll be VERY good.

Asked him about the playoffs also. Said they were all realistic about the chances of doing it, but that whilst its possible they have to keep beleiving it can be done.

If no promotion this year he absolutely thinks Adkins should stay. Understands our frustrations but disagrees with those calling for Adkins to go as he thinks Adkins can take us a long way and be here for a long time.

He really did change my opinion on things and I'm in a much more positive frame of mind for next season. I would say this season but I'm now sure we've left it too late.

Did they mention anything about some of the playing squad being disruptive?

I agree he should be here next season, pointless getting rid.

It would kill me to see a new manager coming in and giving players yet another chance.

However if the rumours I hear are true, it might be a new manager we get.

Have you heard a name for a possible replacement, or just that Adko will be on the way out?

I supect if you asked Basham, Brayford, Coutts, Done, Collins, McNulty, Harris, Freeman, Scougs and Howard amongst others about his methods, their response would be different. After the board allowed Adkins to add six expensive players to his squad, his great methods have turned a play off side into a mid table side.
It didn't feel like things were close to clicking two games ago at Southend. Adkins can take us a long way, but it will not be in the direction. Get rid and get Cotterill or Powell in at the end of the season, unless another ideal candidate is available. Others will probably be available then. Kenny Jacket may be out of a job at the end of the season.

Great to read that Mr Urchin,

Heard similar myself from people in and around the Academy, and connected to the club.

While frustration over this season is understandable, we need that stability, to get us where we all want to be.

The club needs to stay strong, everything is working well at all levels under the first team, its only a matter of time, if we stick with Adkins, that we finally gain promotion from this league.

Hopefully we can have a strong end to the season, more performances like Walsall, and give everyone that belief we have the right man in place, and to encourage as many as possible to buy season tickets for next season.

A positive thread, love it.

Couldn't give a fuck what those wasters think. They should have pulled their fingers out a bit more for their beloved Clough if he was that good.

I'd happily ask them whilst telling (at the very least) 7 of the 9 players on that list who are still here to find a new club as quickly as possible.

I wouldn't even ask the ones in bold. The problem is that they're almost all contracted beyond the end of this season on wages far in excess of what their abilities deserve (thanks Cloughy).

I appreciate the sentiment behind the OP but at some point it's going to have to click for Adkins. Generally, Unitedites are supportive and he's been cut a lot of slack but even with that our form and performances haven't been good enough. Even still, sacking him would set us back another year so he's just about retaining the benefit of the doubt with me.

I'm a natural pessimist and extremely wary of anyone who sounds overly media trained as their answers/responses are normally a waste of time. However this young lad was refreshingly honest without slagging off anyone. He was very clear in his blaming of the players and his faith in Adkins.

Didn't press him about the rumours of player discontent as I thought it a waste of time. He'd either not comment or confirm it. In either case it'd make naff all difference knowing.

Take this info however you want. Just thought I'd share it. I certainly didn't detect any bullshit from him and I'm good at that (it's part of my job).

For me personally I think next season could well be a special one, subject to certain players leaving and the correct recruitment of others combined with our admirable emphasis on youth. Should next season be a good one I really can see Adkins taking us a long way now.

The player's comment about his methods fill me with confidence that he's got the ability to manage us in a modern enough way to compete in the Premier League, should we get there.

I believe a few have heard similar rumours, but allegedly Adkins will part by mutual consent, and the board favour Chris Wilder - but with someone above him in a DOF kind of role. Guess we'll find out sooner or later.

I would love it , just love it , if he's got the ability to manage us in a modern enough way to compete in league 1 , never mind the premier league which is light years away . ( should we get there ) .

Yes confidence is there with a reserve judgement .

UTB.

Sorry I missed this what rumours?

So who is this young player?

He either needs keeping for at least another season, or sacking now before it's too late to find a decent replacement who will have a full pre-season. I'm just on the side of "keep him" but only just. A lot of the crap players need to go though.

I believe a few have heard similar rumours, but allegedly Adkins will part by mutual consent, and the board favour Chris Wilder - but with someone above him in a DOF kind of role. Guess we'll find out sooner or later.
He isn't out of contract at the end of the season, so why wait until then? Why not just do it now?

Not naming names. On the fringes of the first team though - seemed like a Blade as well the way he talked.

Don't always believe what young kids say , even when there on the fringes of league 1 football first team. , and wear there baseball caps back to front , as a statement .:D

Wrong way round. You should appoint a DoF first and then he appoints the manager.

We'll fuck this up as well.

Nah he seemed very grounded and mature. Not the first youth player i've talked to over the past year or so. Usually at Meadowhall or charity do's (my work sponsor events for a local charity that the Blades also support). Seems like they're coached well, taught how to play the right way AND are encouraged to behave the right way.

I don't doubt anything about what this player said, or Adkins abilities as a manager.

The bottom line is he has to stay, and we have to refresh the playing staff. Unless people have had a serious event of amnesia, any player we have owned in the past ten years which has ability has been flogged for undisclosed sums, and anything brought into replace has been of a net sub-standard. Now if you start with a thousand pounds and loan it in increments getting a less-than-loaned-value return, have a guess how skint you'll be, pretty soon?

It is all about the talent on the pitch.

I was talking to another young player just 2 hours ago and he says exactly the opposite to what your young player mentioned but I'm not naming names.

I dont really care what the development players think ,they dont see him close up on match days
I look at a league table and ask , have we progressed under him
I look at the squad and see how much better is it under him
I look at our home record and ask has he made us invincible at home
I look up in the table and see burton walsall barnsley bradford gillingham millwall and wigan all better placed and ponder , have we benefitted from his knowledge
I look at threads in here after games and count those where fans say , that was brilliant, or we were wonderful today. not very time consuming

I look at next season and think , will it get any better if hes still here
I look for a pack of tissues and start to cry

Hmm, do these rumours just sound like an amalgamation of various bits of threads posted on here over the last few months?

Well I was talking to McCabe ten minutes ago and he says you're all cunts. He's buying Messi and Bale, getting Vardy on loan until next Christmas and Mourinho was looking in the Star at house prices down Heeley.

:)
