10m12 of pure Adkins...
  • Good win at Doncaster with a clean sheet. Happy with the support too
  • Bury took a beating, Adkins expecting a response so we'll need to be at the top of our game
  • Expecting a competitive game: they've beaten Burton and Wigan and could have scored 6 against Coventry (??!!)
  • Doing well away from the Lane
  • Got to balance keeping a consistent team and freshening it up
  • Mentions Sharp - "getting closer"
  • Reed, Calvert-Lewin and Adams get praise for their performances at Doncaster

  • Impressed with DCL in pre-season, the loan at Northampton was to aid development rather than sitting in the stands here
  • Athleticism important but you need six "big uns" in the team for set pieces - DCL can potentially cover both aspects
  • Chance for DCL to become a role model - mentions the 50% academy to first team target again
  • Young players need to be able to deal with the pressure of playing for United

  • Che Adams - mentions behind the scenes distractions - but hopes that he can put that to one side
  • Wants players to maximise their potential and get consistency of performance
  • Experience is vital, wants players to learn from their mistakes (I thought this was interesting - rather than avoiding the mistakes in the first place which might have been the Clough/Warnock/Wilson approach)

  • Believes the settled team has limited the number of defeats but we've drawn too many
  • Aim is now the play offs

  • Goalscoring - wants goals from all across the team but mentions that the "main striker" is the "finisher" - names Sharp for this
  • Mentions Adams and Baxter for their goalscoring too and challenges the centre halves to chip in with more

  • Baxter: best role is no10. Not the most athletic ("no disrespect to Jose")

  • RS talks about retaining confidence; NA doesn't address this directly but instead talks about his passion for the game and his pride about being the manager
  • Makes substitutions to try and win games
  • "we might not get [where we want to be] straight away but we'll get there eventually"

Good summary :-)

Not heard it yet but I can almost hear him speaking.

Apart from the obvious stuff from that I'd pick out more goals from centre halves. Collins has had plenty of chances this season. Hammond has also got on the end of back post free kicks a few times.

Remember how bad set pieces were last season?

Sorry - got dragged into a meeting before I could post my thoughts. FWIW, while I do like Adkins' interviews as I like to try and look past what's actually said, this one was not the most informative. Some of that was down to the questions - NA was able to straight bat them like a county batsman facing a village bowler, some of that down to the circumstances - making that number of changes at Doncaster and getting the win means he's going to keep the decisions about who plays tomorrow under wraps.

What I did get out of it is that he's realised that relying on Baxter to defend doesn't help anyone - it's not natural for Baxter and it affects his ability to affect the game in an attacking sense and that Adkins is a big fan of Calvert-Lewin. It wouldn't surprise me to see a similar line up at Bury but perhaps with Basham in for Reed.

When does Hammond get his two match ban? He must be close to 10 yellows now - and in not many more appearances.

EDIT:

Wow. 9 bookings in his past 14 games. That's impressive.

He mentioned McNulty as well, so he must be aware of his form down at Pompey.

Interesting he did mention making subs to win games, I think that was him admitting he may have got subs wrong in the past.

Apart from that a standard interview from Adkins and not really much to say since we won the last match.

here is the post match interview (before the game!).. a la homage from WHF post ;)
  • good victory
  • clean sheet
  • excellent pass for the goal
  • we passed the ball well on a lively pitch
  • good following
  • players worked hard
  • good victory away from home
  • George not had much to do
  • the players have a belief
  • Hammond experienced, worked his socks off
  • good team performance
  • need to keep driving on
  • supporters were good, kept behind the team, will be important
  • u21s played well yesterday
  • always had confidence in playing the youngsters

He gets a 1 match ban not 2

I really like the Adkins/Staton combination I feel like I learn a lot from every interview. Sometimes by reading between the lines.

He talks up DCL. I like that.

Has a clear vision of the attributes he wants in players at the club and DCL fits that picture.

Mentions pace and athleticism as KPIs (key performance indicators, presumably) from a recruitment point of view. Nice bit of management speak. :)

Are you Mr Adkins' agent WHF ???
Having been in management for most of my working life I soon worked out many years ago that management speak generally equated to rubbish !
As for Key Performance Indicators - there is only one that matters - Promotion at the end of the season - nothing else is important after spending so many years in this dreadful division !!
Sit with me WHF at any home game and everyone around me mentions pace and athleticism sadly lacking in Adkins' team !

He'd probably ignore you all.

Why hasn't he recruited any players with said attributes?
