Where would we have been without it? Doesn't old warnock deserve some credit as well? Its funny but since Wilder and Knill arrived the majority of the news coming in about our club seems positive, even though some of the things have had nothing to do with them, how much value do you put on that?

Spot on mate .

Wilders influence doesn't stop at the first team level .

Mitchell's appointment was another masterstroke and his influence won't be felt at a first team level only too .

I regard this as a sign that the people who have run the Academy knew what they were doing, but that those controlling transfers and transfer policy didn't know what they were doing.

Happily, we are at least now buying the right players. Hopefully we'll keep a few more of the right ones for longer going forward.

It's right here that the friction between us lot , the fans , is at it hottest .

For some time now I've been resigned to losing the cream of the crop from the Academy . Whilst ever we aren't a PL team we're going to lose players . Its really that simple . And whilst i hate seeing it happen and try to rationalise the moves from a business perspective , it still feels shit . But what can we do , realistically ? We can hold out for more cash , but they'll still move when the cash is waved in our faces .

It's a sad and sorry state of affairs but that's cold stark reality of the game today . Money talks .

The Academy has been great and has got even better.

The argument that we should refuse its graduates a move on because they can play for us and become worth more later is over simplistic.

Special young talent will only develop with better players around them. DCL was more effective and improved at Everton in a way that he would never have done with us. Add to that, if you refuse a player a move, and hence a shitload of cash, he will go for nothing eventually and will never be really motivated to be a part of your team culture.

To date McCabe has built all of the basics for a very successful football business - ground, pricing for a strong fan base, successful academy funnel, sound finances - the only missing item has been a successful football team!!

I guess the missing ingredient to achieve a successful side has been the right manager, and everybody believes that by accident or design he has added that final piece to the jigsaw.

If we move forward, without attracting some new billionaire investors, we can still become a top Champ / low Prem club. At that level, we may start to be able to keep / pay / develop our young talent, even if we then still sell them on like Southampton.

Looking at that list of top academies, it is a sign of real potential future development as well as pride. All of those above us are undoubtedly stronger pulls, and hence more difficult for kids to enter and stay in. Any parent / mentor of a kid missing out for Manure or Chelski will look at that list and see where realistic opportunity might still lie.

The future's bright.
The future's red and white.

Credit to McCabe & Warnock would you believe. Lucifer and his assistant according to some...

Prescient article in The Independent from January 2003:-

<< When Warnock took over at Bramall Lane in December 1999, he knew that the club needed to start producing their own players again. "For some reason," he explains, "we had no youth policy at all anymore. So the first thing I did when I arrived was ask the board to build us an academy."

Three years on, and the centre is in full swing. Of the current first-team squad, no fewer than four players (Tonge, Nick Montgomery, Phil Jagielka and Ben Doane) came through the ranks. Warnock believes that a large part of the scheme's success is down to the academy's director. "And I'm not just saying that because he's my big brother," Warnock junior says. "Right from the off, John and I had a vision. We wanted to try to emulate what Ipswich have achieved. Selling one homegrown player every year is the only logical way we can survive." Should United fail to reach the Premiership this year, Tonge would almost certainly be the first to go, probably to Liverpool. "That's the reality," Warnock says, "and that's why we have to make absolutely sure we get promoted." >>

Kevin McCabe himself has given John Warnock the lion's share of credit for the success of the academy, including in a matchday programme last season. Something like: I've always said John was the Warnock to leave the biggest legacy at United. Couple of interesting articles re John Warnock below this quote:
" John was instrumental in the setting up of the initial strategy for the Sheffield United FA Academy and the driving force behind the building of what was then a £5m facility that has not only brought through a number of successful players but also ensured the services provided by the Academy facilities included access for local community groups from some of the most deprived areas across Sheffield".

Great times, we can lay claim to be the new Crewe.

But surely our academy would be more benefit to the first team if did not produce players of Premiership potential?

We need to produce some bog standard first teamers that do us a job on the cheap but are of no interest to the big boys. Doesn't matter how much cash we get for the stars - it all goes into the same Bramall Lane cash black hole - and they usually only play a handful of games for our first team.

So I'd suggest we stop taking on kids with either great potential or no potential and focus on the average lads. I thought we'd cracked it with Matt Lowton but he even he made it. Maybe Ben Whiteman will stick around and do a job.

If we stop pouring money down a black hole (by this I assume you mean bad managers and players?) and spend it on good players, and managers, we've pretty much got it sussed. It's always better to produce good players than mediocre or bad ones.

We need to hurry and close ours down. It is clearly a financial burden on the club. :fattwat::fattwat::fattwat::fattwat::fattwat::fattwat::fattwat::fattwat::fattwat::fattwat::fattwat::fattwat::fattwat::fattwat:

Here's the list with minutes played.

1 Manchester United 44,055

2 Tottenham 19,995

3 Manchester City 16,226

4 Southampton 14,340

5 West Ham 13,907

6 Everton 13,855

7 Arsenal 13,599

8 Sheffield United 13,564

9 Chelsea 13,445

10 Ajax 12,617

11 Feyenoord 12,589

12 Barcelona 10,858

36 more minutes of DCL on the pitch for Everton and we'd have topped Arsenal as well.

Whatever way you cut it this is good news for a Club that's been in the third tier for 6 seasons. It'll be a good stat to show new youngsters how they have more of a chance by going through the Blades academy (don't forget we are a class 2 academy) than they may by joining one from a Premiership club.

Also how many of those minutes for man united etc.. are from players they have poached at a young age
