Another good win this morning, dominated the first half but missed Slew up front. Second half they struggled 'uphill' into the wind for 20 minutes. But they came good and grabbed the winner when with a header from one of the subs from a corner. (Sorry no name as cutbacks mean no team sheets :))

We might just have a midfield general in the making, Harriott once again looked a very good player. I have seen him 3 times this season and been very impressed with the way he is always wanting the ball. He finds space well and moves the ball quickly, basically he makes the whole team tick. He rarely gives the ball away and looks a real good prospect.
 



Harriott was the number 4 wasn't he? He looked a class above some of our lads I thought. Really impressed with him. Very influential aswell, always talking to the other players. If I'm right I believed we got him from Luton in the summer, very good signing if true.

I thought the number 10 (Mcfazdean?) had got onto the end of the corner but there were alot of bodies in there so it was difficult to tell. I thought Barry looked good at centre half too, and Ironside did well despite being very isolated up front.
 
Yep he was the number 4, and somebody was saying he came from Luton. Was simply going on the subs reaction when I said he'd scored as the far end is a long way away. I also like the number 8 having seen him a few times, really combative but can pick a pass out too, also looked good when he dropped back to CH.
 
Yeah it's quite a way back behind that other net, I struggled to see it myself and I was near the halfway line!

Number 8 is Terry Kennedy. That's the first time I've seen him in midfield, he's normally at centre half so it surprised me to see him there but I thought he did quite well. We've certainly got some promising, and versatile players coming through looking at the last few games I've seen up there.

Have we got any height, strength and pace in the Academy side? Haven't been to watch them since Tonge tried to kill a Man U player straight from kick off many years ago but the impression from afar has been that they're a little like the first team - i.e. generally 5' 7" and not the quickest.

Loved Pembo as a player, thought his display at centre back v Leeds a few days after the pigs had beat us at Wembley was one of the best I've seen at the Lane. He wasn't the biggest but if we can find a few as quick as he was, we'll be doing OK.

I'm pretty sure it's the same guy, he's always partnered Maguire at the back when I've been. They were all shouting 'Tel' when he was on the ball too.

We've not got a great deal of real pace other than Pennycooke-Morgan and Slew when he plays, but we do have a couple of big guys. Maguire is over 6ft, Barry and Ironside are big lads for their age too. They are all technically sound though, so they do play some good football when they get going. I've always enjoyed watching them and I'll hopefully be going to watch them play against Wednesday next week.

And another note, Forest's huge centre half (No,. 5?) is called Jamaal Lascelles. He looked a very good defender, and he was absolutely huge to say he was only 17 on Thursday. I thought he was the oldest of the whole lot!
 
I think the interesting thing is that whilst there aren't really any pigeon catchers amongst them they do play at decent tempo and move the ball around quickly with good movement which does compensate for the lack of real pace. Maybe this is something the first team need to work on as sometimes in recent weeks whilst the passing has been better its also been at an almost pedestrain pace with players not receiving the ball whilst on the move.
 
Foster released

Nathaniel Foster has been released.

Seems odd. I know he had a few injury problems but wasn't he playing for the fiirst team this pre season?

Seems a strange one.

Odd how we have these so called top prospects like him, Askham, Chapman and Ross that are regulars at reserve level and seen as possible 1st teamers then suddenly they are let go. Obviously not many have gone onto great things but sytrange we keep them till they are 19/20/21 and then let them go for basically nothing. Most young players will be in and around the 1st team by the age of 18/19 or unlikely they will make it at the club they are at and often need to move down the leagues. Maybe that is the case with some of these but seems quite a drop for Foster from possible Champ prospect to basically just above park football. :eek:
 
Often it's not the lack of talent that does them it's the lack of professionalism. As I understand it one of the best lads from the U16 has quit as he doesn't like being told what to do.

Very true. The non-league is full of talent, but the reason it's there is the lack of application. It matters as much what's upstairs as what the feet can do...

Aye, its very true. Alot of it can come down to the players own attitude or an attitude instilled in them by pushy parents.

My under 7's played a brilliant team of very talented players yesterday, we got hammered but I could already see in their players at this age that the attitude being instilled at their club wasn't the best playing environment for kids of that age. Now I aint saying any of those players won't make academies or even the professional game, but making the game all about winning and winning is the only thing important from such a young age can have a serious detrimental effect on players, if you take it too serious from a really young age players can get burned out and fail to see the fun in the game anymore. But then there are other causes too, young lads want to hang around with their mates, go get pissed or whatever else they want to go and do. Tony (a coach at Rotherham) was my course tutor, and he told us a few cases about players with loads of talent but the completely wrong attitude

Pembo has installed a very tight discipline code and it has upset a few of the little darlings.

Personally screw them, if they can't stand not being allowed mobiles and jewellery while they are at the academy maybe they need to try a career elsewhere.

Personally I agree with that, it's all about testing them out and if they can't hack the phone thing (or in the case I referred to the first problem was he wasn't allowed to wear his yellow boots!) then they'll certainly not be able to make the other sacrifices necessary to carve a career in the professional game.
 
Yeah the no coloured boots has upset a few but for fucks sake do you want to play football for a living or not.
 
the biggest problem is that they also prefer to stay in on consoles rather than kicking a ball about.

He's also introduced the all the coaches Part-time and Full Time to some sort of performance management where they have to provide a written report on each traing session. He's also instilled some discipline into the coaches making them fully responsible for the behaviour of their group and observing the "dress code" e.g. socks must be don't down by the ankles, only the provided kit to be worn etc.

On a side note i went shopping for some astroturf boots, in sportsdirect the other day. All i wanted was a pair of simple cheapish black and white boots, nothing fancy at all. I couldn't find a single pair, that fitted the bill. The plain black and white ones were all too expensive, and the cheaper ones were yellow, red, pink etc. Ended up with a pair of white ones :eek:

and quite rightly too. I also think he is identifying players like the lad from Luton to bring in.

Personally I think he is doing an amazing job so far, and all credit should go to him and Birch for hiring him. Especially since Blackwell was dead against it and wanted Mark Smith instead.
Nothing against Mark but its hardly comparable experience.
 
I think Slew made an impression he's been told to score for the reserves to get his chance and he's started doing just that.
