Hi

I'm an Ipswich Town fan who likes to write about the Championship over on Substack.

I've written an article about the numerous issues with the Selles appointment and the recruitment at Sheffield United this summer. I'd interested to hear your thoughts and please consider subscribing (it's free) to my page if you enjoy. I appreciate it's a topic that most Blades fans will be keen to move on from though!

What are your views on the rest of the season? Do you think promotion is still a realistic aim or is it a bridge too far after the poor start?

Welcome, Jacob. Always good to see the younger generation take up some footballing journalism and the article is a good read and pretty accurate.

The only two things that stood out for me particularly were the below points:

  • Defeated play-off finalists already have the shortest pre-season of any team in the league.
One would assume this only pertains to those teams which actually had a pre-season, not including our neighbours in the south of Barnsley who literally didn't have one.

  • ...no Director of Football in place as of mid-September. This confused approach was reflected in their recruitment...the only arrivals were under-23s from the Bulgarian league and loanees who had worked with Selles before.
Most of us saw this as COH trying their hand at their new recruitment strategy via AI rather than panic buys due to a lack of DOF.

As for the rest of the season, I expect the lads to come flying out the traps with a rocket up their arse on Saturday which is well overdue. Given our financial predicament of the final year of parachute payments, reaching the play-offs has to be the target but as Willglynning says above, we're not that far away from some of the "big hitters" this season so anything is possible in the Championship. Get some points on the board and looking forward to seeing how things go. Cheers and all the best with the blog!

Good article. I think top six is a bridge too far this season, but certain we'll pull out of the relegation zone. If the pork get relegated and we don't that's a decent season.
Thanks! I think both of those things are fairly likely to happen!
Considering we’re only 6 points behind the big favourites, Ipswich & Southampton, despite us having such a disastrous start- it could be a lot worse.
It definitely feels a bit more of an open league this year.

Thanks, very kind.

On point one, yeah that is correct!

I didn't really go into the AI stuff in the article as there doesn't seem to be loads of detail out there about whether it's just the usual data-led recruitment that most clubs do nowadays or if it's anything different. Hopefully it's a bit more sophisticated than just asking Chat GPT who to buy! Do you reckon the deals towards the end of the window were done with bringing Wilder back in mind? They seem more like his kind of signings.

One of our consortium is a venture capitalist investor that specialises in early investment into AI tech companies. The idea is to use some clubs (Dunfermline, Cordoba, United) as a proving ground for this software.

How it’s supposed to work is the Technical Board identity player attributes we need, the software crunches a big data set and spits out a list of players for the scouts to go and watch.

Because we’re completely tinpot and run like a Sunday league team we don’t have a technical board and our scouts have forgotten where their passports are, so we had to quickly revert back to Bettis and Hoyland calling through their little black book of agents to see whose available at the last minute. It wasn’t because Wilder was coming back, it’s because they panicked and the people that were here when Wilder was went back to doing what they have always done.

All the while Selles had to deal with with an under strength back room staff and playing staff that had completely thrown in the towel.

Being very pedantic, '. The 4-1 defeat to the same Bristol City side...was the worst possible start' is not wholly accurate. 5-0 would have been worse.

Great read, good effort young man.

What puzzles me is that the individual errors grew as time went on. Yes confidence and belief dwindled but our complete collapse can be summed up by the form of Cooper. Last season he was the coolest man in any ground he played in, now he looks a bag of nerves and frustration.
Even in pre season, against Nice he was making uncharacteristic errors.
Every issue that has been mentioned (not replacing Vini, losing Anel late on, Barry's tracking back, Brooks' form, Campbells effort) are all pieces of a puzzle but are all exaggerated in my eyes. Vini didn't play every game last season and we didn't look this bad, Anel was always replaceable etc.
For me, RS not only did a terrible job at unifying a new squad but he either confused them with his new way of training and playing, or lost them completely as they pretty much downed tools.

That's interesting, cheers. It definitely seems like the owners never fully committed to the change in structure that they'd been planning.

100% on Cooper. I wrote a season preview back in July and he was the reason I was confident the issue about outperforming the XG data last season was overplayed. The attacking numbers were in line with what you'd expect and Cooper has consistently been one of the best shot stoppers in the league throughout his career so fully expected him to overperform again. So far, that's aged liked milk.

Nobody seems to be pulling away, I think this season will be a lot closer at the top. Not out of the realms of possibility that we could sneak into the play offs

Most Blades will say the sacking was madness etc etc without realising these owners are very intelligent and highly successful business men.
It wasn’t done on a whim, they’re paid millions for Sheff Utd and have obviously come up with a tactical plan why they thought Selles was preferable to Wilder.

I don’t agree with it….but these are the probably reasons for the change.

1: All new owners usually analyse their new business and are keen to make changes. It’s called putting their stamp on a club.
2: They probably saw that SUFC need to join 90% of other clubs in the world by having a more distant first team coach instead of a club manager who has his fingers in many pies. They probably saw CW as an older traditional type with old methods and wanted someone who accepts being a coach with less control.
3: Won’t have been impressed that Wilder walks around the club and training ground like he owns the place but that’s just becuase he’s from the city and a big fan who is passionate and proud to manager his club. Did Wilder have too much power at the club, probably yes and some owners don’t like that situation.
4: The owners wanted to fish in the much bigger foreign transfer market and will have noticed that Wilder has little experience managing foreigners where as Selles have much more experience coaching abroad and working with all nationalities.
5: Owners, especially in the US realise the value of reputation, hence why they like to appoint a Wayne Rooney or Steven Gerrard as manager.
A big name instantly raises the profile of a club.
I don’t agree with it but they won’t have been impressed hearing about Wilder being drunk singing about Danny Rohl after his win.
Also will have been concerned with poor disciplinary record regards players fighting, especially after the final whistle, this lack of discipline usually comes from a manager. Selles might be boring but he’s young, presentable and a very professional personality, guaranteed no trouble or controversy.
6: The owners have downplayed the importance of the effects a manager can have on results. They automatically assumed “good players = a good team”, however as we knew people like Wilder have hidden qualities like charisma, passion and the power to motivate. Selles was more of a theoretical computer manager.
7: You can imagine Selles turning up for his interview with iPad in hand….doing a PowerPoint presentation about how he uses statistical data to devise match tactics
And the owners will have been so impressed with Selles, thinking wow…..this guy embraces technology, he is the future Pep Gardiola.

The new owners have been naive thinking they can simply apply their high level business techniques and skills to football.
They made a mistake try to do things too quickly and taking things for granted, also made a massive mistake regards the choice of Selles, his record isn’t great so they were trying to be too clever but at least they’ve held their hand up regards their mistake and reversed their decision very quickly.

Anyway the sacking has done CW a massive favour. As well as receiving additional money.
Wilder now returns under much less pressure, he’ll be even hungrier to prove the owners wrong and he’ll be much more appreciated by the fanbase.
Roll on a few boring 1-0 unconvincing wins…..we’ll all take it now ha ha.

Bristol finished 24pts behind our total last season. If we had started on -15 instead of -2 then we would still have made the playoffs. I get that its a tough task to make playoffs but nowhere near a done deal that we miss out!

In short - they were fecking clueless, franchise merchants who have no idea about the English league football and how difficult it is.
They got seduced by the appliance of science and a painting by numbers coach with limited experience and an uninspiring track record.
They’ve done nothing to upgrade the infrastructure and have just realised the size of the bollock they have dropped and done a U-turn just in time to prevent it going all shapes of shit in a handcart.

Got it in one…..let’s hope they’ve learnt a harsh lesson.

Who are your picks for the top six at the moment?
In no particular order
Boro
Leicester
Southampton
Ipswich
Birmingham
Blades

I think if Wilder can get a tune out of us fairly quickly and we can get points on the board I feel we can sneak into the play offs. He revels in being the underdog and right now we are outsiders for promotion.

Top 6 is still on, we’re only 6 points behind Ipswich, and I don’t think Boro, or Stoke go all the way… there just early season pacesetters….

If we’re with 6 points of the top 2 by Christmas… whoever they are…. GAME ON!!!

Let’s hope Leicester get a sizeable points deduction!
Don’t see Brum being consistent enough either.
Fingers crossed two extra spots there.

Thanks.

He is playing with an knee problem

Good luck, I’ll have a look later.

I’ve stopped listening to 2nd tier podcast as I was tired of the Wednesday fellating.

It’s a crowded market place but always good to hear a fresh voice

Brum have dropped back a bit haven’t they. Tom Turkey Teeth irritates me, but not as much as Ryan Reynolds and his c list pals
