Just out of interest which players do you think are Championship quality ?
I have said on an other thread that I went through our squad and put a tick against anyone who I thought would be Championship quality, a question mark against who I thought could be, and a cross against who wouldn't be.
I didn't have any ticks alot of question marks and some crosses.
Moore JOC Coutts Sharp

Maybes Fleck Duffy Carrithers EEL Basham Freeman Brayford

Doubtful Lavery Done Hussey McNuts Wright Wilson

No chance Scoogs Lafferty Clarke

Lavery? Doubtful?

The lad has played, and scored, in the championship, at least two braces from what I can remember, one against dirty Leeds for a start.

Definite: JOC Fleck Sharp

Probably: Coutts Carruthers Moore EEL Freeman

Maybe: Lavery Duffy Basham Brayford Lafferty

No chance: Wright Wilson McNulty Done Hussey Scougs Clarke

Bit harsh on Wright, Done and Scougs, would keep all three though. Done and Scougs could still be useful off the bench and Wright obviously has the right mentality to be a benefit behind the scenes

Freeman should be fine with a decent back three behind him, but not in a back 4. Lafferty would be fine back-up, as would Basham. Question mark over whether Duffy can make the step up as he hasn't done before. Brayford is a forgotten man who I don't expect to be here. Juries out on Lavery but if he can carry on as he has the last two games he should make the step-up.

Moore
New EEL JOC
Freeman Coutts Carruthers Fleck New
Sharp New/Lavery

Bench: Basham, Done, Lafferty, Duffy, ???

Not a team I'd expect to challenge at the top end but one I'd expect to comfortably stay up, along with the belief carried forward from this season.

I'd have it like this providing they're playing in a system and with players that give them a reasonable chance...

Definitely: Moore, O'Connell, Fleck, Coutts, Carruthers

Probably: EEL, Freeman, Basham, Duffy, Sharp, Lavery

Maybe: Wright, Lafferty

No: Wilson, Brayford, Hussey, Scougall, McNulty, Done, Clarke

So I think most of the first team could cope, individually. That doesn't mean I think they could all cope playing with each other. I only think 2/3 could excel. Our best players would most likely have to be new signings, just like last summer.

Definite: JOC Fleck Moore

Probably: Coutts Carruthers Lafferty (purely as a left back) Lavery

Maybe: Duffy Basham EEL Freeman Sharp

No chance: Wright Wilson McNulty Done Hussey Scougs Clarke

Bit harsh on Sharp but he's not getting any younger and would have to rely on being a poacher. Think Lafferty has proven he can be good as an out and out left back in the Championship. It's the going forward side of his game that he struggles with. I'd have put Duffy in a probably but he never did it at Birmingham

If you are a businessman , you make plans.
On current cold hard facts & figures , we should be promoted.
That's in a businessman's head , not in my fearful heart , broken time and again over 10 years.
Why would a businessman's wait till the summer to scrap around for a Championship striker ?
He knows that NONE of our strikers will score regularly in the Championship.
The only one who can score regularly in League 1 , is getting older & slower and it will be 3 years since Leeds decided he couldn't help them in the Championship.
So we will need a brand new strike force up there , with Lavery as sub IF he develops.
The required investment is huge. But it will certainly be bigger in the summer.
So , who is our businessman ?
McCabe , the Prince , CW ? Or a combination ?
Can we for once get on the front foot and get ahead of the game ?
Let's be proactive , look where reactive has taken us.

Agree with all that. And there might be few better times to attract championship quality players than a January window when the best odds you can get on us topping the division are 1/12. Sort it out McCabe and Prince Torture State ! :)

If it could be any striker at this level who I think could do it at the championship, my choice would be Lee Gregory, Think he is quality at this level and looks to have the ability to make the step up and even overtake Sharp as the number one striker (sacrilege I know).

Gregory is a blade through and through himself so it ain't sacrilege :)

On current form, I seriously suggest you are writing off Billy far too quickly.

I would point out to you that the Leeds side in the championship 3 years ago being a shadow of the side it is today, and who saw fit to deploy young William as a left sided midfielder for the most part !!!

I take your points as regards the others and that if promoted, investment in the squad will need to be significant.

But, IMHO, we do currently have 4 or 5 players of genuine Championship quality. Maybe a few others can develop too (Whiteman / Lavery).

UTB
Obviously Billy's enthusiasm & goals have fuelled our form and I appreciate that if we go up , his contribution will have been crucial.
However , it reminds me of Stan in 1990 , aged 32 , leading us into the Prem after 7 years of stalwart service , but knowing that his heroic status can't defeat the aging process in a more demanding league.

I don't think that Billy would look out of place , but I can't see him carrying the scoring responsibility.
It's even harder for a striker who depends on reflexes , not height or pace , to make the step up at 31.
No true Blade can dislike Billy , but this isn't an emotional assessment , just business.

Who could play - effectively - in the starting 11 - if we got to the Championship tomorrow ?
Moore , JOC , EEL if we get him , Freeman if on current form , Lafferty ,
Coutts , Fleck , Duffy (for short-term , Samir is his replacement) ,
That's it.

Who could be useful bench/squad names ?
Basham (think Monty In the Prem) ,
Lavery (if he develops as I think he will) ,
Billy (because we can't afford to buy 3 new strikers) ,
A few promising youngsters.

If CW thinks this season is a challenge , his horizon could be about to explode in the summer.

I hope he gets a lovely long holiday somewhere restful in May ☺.

I think Wilder will take the Championship in his stride, just like he's taken all the leagues below it in his stride up to now. The basic ingredients are the same, no matter what level you are playing at. Sign competent players, get them working hard as individuals and bonding as a team. Fix problems quickly, don't let them fester. Don't have room for sentiment either - if players aren't doing it, drop them. No one is too big or important. And play neat passing football but always look to be going forward and attacking. That seems to be Wilder's recipe to me and that will work at any level.

The bigger question is how much he'll be backed, financially, at the next level up? I don't want to ever see us spending stupid money on players, but it's a fact that it's a whole new level of expense when you are trying to sign players who can cut it at the top end of the Prem.

Mr macabe has said we will have good investment if we get into the Championship, im presuming he means from the Prince. But we have to get there first. So we will see. This is our best chance of going up. I think Macabe knows it.

Can see McCabe selling his 50% share to an ally of the prince and that will solve two problems, in that McCabe will get some money back and the blades get investment.
Oh and Kevin has the hotel and the real estate

We've scored 50 goals, that's 1 less than the leading scorers Scunthorpe who have 51 goals to their name and we're moaning about needing a striker. I wouldn't complain if we signed another quality striker but it's not a must as we have goals coming from all over the park. In fact I'm glad it's that way. Sharp and Lavery will blossom as time goes on.

I think Lavery is that man so no addition in this area needed. He seems on form and well up for it - and a good stint in the first team will likely be enough to push us over the finishing line.

For me, maybe just a LWB will do it now.

' It's starting to look a lot like Promotion! ' :p

Evening Blades. Now I'm not usually one to 'stir the pot' so to speak, but I've been told by 2 different people today that we've 'agreed personal terms' with a new striker. Neither of them gave any indication to who it may be & I'm now I'm scratching my head... has anyone else heard anything or have I been had?

UTB

Can we safely file this under "bollocks"..?

Now if you read the opening post very carefully, you will find that it was a question as to whether anyone else had heard similar to what I had.

It can neither be defined as "bollocks" nor "waffle".

It can be labelled as a "question".

Oh and Kevin has the hotel and the real estate

and 4 houses and a hotel on Old Kent Road and Whitechapel. It's doesn't seem much, but it soon mounts up.

I am bit hesitant about writing off Scougall, who I think would perform better higher up like he did in the cup. Certainly wouldn't get rid of him

I agree he might perform better if the big lads weren't so physical with him and I think the lower divisions are more physical, so there's some logic in what you say there. If he was playing in the Prem for example he'd have acres of space and time to do his thing, whereas in League 1 he gets swatted like a fly every time he gets on the ball.

Unfortunately for him, we can't afford to take him along just for the ride, in the hope that when we do get back to the Prem he'll be able to start showing us what he can do properly. He has to be able to make a contribution now - and for me - he's not capable of doing that on a regular basis. I think some of his performances this season, under Wilder, have been great, but, he's such a hot and cold player, even within the same game. One minute he's got the ball and is buzzing forwards with it like someone has just put 2000 volts through him, the next minute he's not touched the ball in the last quarter of an hour and is running around chasing shadows or getting put on his arse. Scougall has no future at this club. I'm sorry, but he doesn't. He will return to Scotland where the football is of a much lower standard and he can really shine there, as he did before. I would get rid of him now personally. Same with Louis Reed and anyone that we signed from Bury.

I like Scougall, but I feel he just isn't quite good enough, for the Championship so I would let him go too

Definite-Coutts,Sharp,Fleck,Moore,Carruthers

Maybe-EEL,Duffy,Freeman,Lavery,JOC,Lafferty.

No chance-Done,Clarke,McNulty,Basham,Scougall,Wallace,Long,Hussey,Wright
