When a fairly high profile position such as this becomes available it is not really that surprising that everyone and their granny is linked with it. By available (by the way) I mean that it has been opened up to applications, rather than the chairman picking someone who will do the job on the cheap, and then persuading them to take the plunge. McCabe appointed managers, he didn’t seek applications.
The last time we really invited applications for the manager’s job, when Warnock got the job, I understand one applicant impressed, but was out-pointed by others with more ‘experience’ and probably were willing to do the job cheaper.
I talk of course, of Keith Edwards.
I can hear both closeted and open guffawing even now, but just have a think about it.
Firstly he is passionate about the club; he is as big a Blade as you could meet. He played in teams that produced some of the best football that I have ever seen at The Lane (although it could be said that he and some of his colleagues should have been playing at a higher level). During his time at The Lane, the football was fast and free-scoring, hardly what we have seen in recent years/months.
Some will scorn his ‘expert summaries’ during matches, but, if you listen the guy does talk sense… most of the time, as with most of us fans, sometimes he talks complete hairy spheres! In addition, to those who did ridicule him, giving him the chance to prove himself would find him out, or not.
One stumbling block, he doesn’t hold his F.A. coaching badges (or should that be KER-CHING badges, they’re not cheap). I also know he is a BIG detractor from their value in the real world. Well, think of some of the great managers, the real greats. Bill Shankley, Alf Ramsey, Cloughy, Bassett (for us), the list can go on, did they need badges to conquer leagues, Europe, the world? No they didn’t. All they needed was some genuine football nouse… and a good physio!
Just imagine a coaching set up of Edwards, supported by TC, Colin Morris, and Paul Stancliffe with Morgs as the ‘apprentice’. I’d pay just to watch a staff kick about!
