How smart is this going to be?
Wil it separate MK Dons and Wimbledon as two teams or 1??
If Darren types "Tottenham" in one result and "Totenham" in another, will it see them as the same team?I think you need some drop down lists here...
Might I suggest as a starting point the following data attributes (not complete):
Competition
Date
Venue
Home Team
Away Team
Score (possibly 2 attributes for Home and away, possibly 2 occs if we want to record FT and AET scores, possibly 3 occs if we want HT, FT and AET scores)
Scorer name
Scorer time
Scorer penalty indicator
Extra Time Indicator
Penalty Win Indicator (i.e. Home or Away team)
which will need normalising, and a shed load of other details (such as date ranges for specific competitions, tier details for competitions, date ranges for mangerial stints etc etc)
I certainly did not start drawing this...

My entities would have been
Match
Players
Teams
Scorers (PlayerId, Time, HomeAwayInd(So you can keep track of own goals))
many to many relationships between:
Match >-< Teams
Teams>-< Players
How are you keeping track of which player scored each goal?
I'm not sure I agree with this one. Whilst a Player can (will) have many teams through his career, and teams have many players, in any given match a player has only 1 team, thus if you define the relationship between Players and Teams via Match you can resolve the issue.
Of course alternatively you can stick in a Club Career entity, which defines when individual players joined and left individual teams. Which would allow you to establish what percentage of games they played for each club...
So:
Team---<Club Career>----Player
Erm, that's exactly the same as my design (I just didn't tell you what extra properties would be in my Linking table)Your ClubCareer entity is the same as a TeamsPlayers table
Great minds think alike then!
I can`t wait to see what sort of a buggers muddle Foxy has come up with...![]()
This thread is very much up there as my thread of the year....geekery at it's finest!
Is it geeky??? Or is it nerdy???
We're designed a database schema. It's definitely nerdy.
We're a proper pair of poindexters us.

Oi.... you lot.
While Foxy 's back-end attentions (for want of a better term) are your main requirement of him.... I need him to build a path and patio this weekend.
I'm already getting "in a minute"s when I try and get him to leave sixth (?) generation S24SU alone and come to bed. He can at least be of some use to his wife and get the gardening done.

I'd model it dimensionally for ease of reporting.
That is all.

There are just too many innuendos in that post that my brain cannot work out which one to pick out and take the mick out of...

To give you an idea, the ratings system (which it'll be added to, obviously without ratings for anything before this season) *WAS* made up of the following tables (this isn't the currently running system):
Team
Team Season Data
Season
Player
Player Season Data
Game
Matchday Squad
Rating
Comments
Yeah, I'm going to need to see a diagram before I sign this off...
