Hi all

We wanted to introduce ourselved before starting to post on here.

Talk Club is a men's mental fitness and suicide prevention community which seeks to provide an opportunity for men over 18 to discuss their feelings, emotions. hopes, dreams and concerns in a non-judgemental environment. The Sheffield United Talk Club has been running for about 3yrs and is based in the Family Hub on John Street.

Every session has the same format, based on four questions.

  • How are You? Out of 10? (Check in)
  • What are you happy about/What are you grateful for?
  • What can you do this week for your mental health?
  • How are You? Out of 10? (Check out)

You may have heard of us, you may have seen some of the content we have put out recently, such as this conversation with Tom Davies. However, we are increasingly aware that there are many Blades out there who simply do not know that we exist. We have joined this forum in a bid to increase awareness of the session and to let you all know that if you, or someone you know is struggling, then the club has something there that may help.

More information about the charity here https://talkclub.org/.

Happy to answer any questions, either on here or via personal message.

Interesting discussion featuring United's very own Tom Davies.
Tom spoke well and addressed the issues that all young professional footballer's are confronted with.

Tom has had to deal with his own mental health issues, and no amount of excessive wages and playboy lifestyle can protect
you from the toxicity that depression can have on anyone, let alone someone still to make their way in the world.

I thought Tom spoke articulately and with insight, as did the other speakers. This has been dealt with many times on this forum, but it's
something that can never be discussed too much, as the number of males of any age group who struggle with mental health is a growing number.

Thanks itsinyerblood.

It was really good speaking to Tom and he's such a humble, down to earth person.

Quite simply, it's ridiculous that suicide the biggest killer of men under 50 and we need to change this. Talking certainly helps, but it's not a silver bullet and we need to look a bit depeer into what other underlying reasons there are for this.

Take care

I wasn't expecting a reply so thanks for your message.

Although a subject that is long overdue discussion, at least the troubling impulses that contribute to this are now (sometimes) openly
talked about. Which is not to suggest that there won't continue to be worrying reasons why men struggle to share and be open about
something so powerful and capable of taking anyone down the darkest of emotional holes.

There's no one-size-fits-all answer to this, although there may be common threads that help enable some type of insight into the whys and wherefores of why some men, and women, are prone to depression. I wish I had an understanding about any of this, but once we're in the grip of something akin to the darkest of clouds then it's as if there's an inevitability about this, where the present and future are caught in a stranglehold that can become a permanent fixture in your life.

Personally, until something catastrophic happens to me I'm pretty solid, that said I think its an amazing idea and community.
Well done to all those involved.

Some good points made here, talking (and listening of course) certainly aids perspective and I often use a horrible phrase which is 'word vomit'. It can be a bit like when you're feeling ill and if you're sick, it's usually uncomfortable and often unpleasant, but it can/does make you feel a bit better afterwards. It won't fix all your problems, but it's so important.

It's also good to think of talking as a preventative measure too. If the dark clouds come over you, then you are already used to talking and you find it much easier to do.

It's certainly all about habits, we often slip into bad habits very easily but if people can develop good habits, then it certainly helps when you are going through tough times

Talk Club likes to refer to themselves as a 'gym for the mind'. Because just like physical fitness, it's something you can do to make yourself more healthy to reduce the likelihood/impact of ill health in future.

That said, some people only need a service like ours in tough times, others need it every week and some just need it when going through a specific trauma - but as long as people know that these services are there if needed, then it's up to the everyone to decide what is right for them
