Apologies for the duplication as I've posted this as a reply elsewhere, but there seems to be a few bits of discussion on various other threads about this so hopefully this finds everyone who is interested.

Yesterday was the 9th time we've won a League game 6-2, and the 8th at home.

6 of these took place before WW2.

6-2 (H) Manchester City, 26/2/1912, D1
6-2 (A) Arsenal, 26/3/1921, D1
6-2 (H) Tottenham, 8/3/1924, D1
6-2 (H) West Ham, 26/12/1927, D1
6-2 (H) Liverpool, 29/8/1932, D1
6-2 (H) Bolton, 29/9/1934, D2
6-2 (H) Leeds, 4/1/1947, D1
6-2 (H) Newcastle, 1/1/1955, D1
6-2 (H) Peterborough, 11/9/2001, Champ

For those still reading - we've lost a League game 6-2 on seven occasions, all away, most recently at Sunderland on 25/4/1979.

We've recorded a 6-2 win in non-competitive matches a further seven times, most recently against Rhyl in a friendly in 1958. 3 of the other 6 came in WW2 league/cup.

We've never won or lost 6-2 in the FA or League Cups, unless you count the aggregate win over Lincoln in the League Cup 1st Round in September 2000. Coincidentally the first leg 6-1 win was the last time we scored 6, prior to the Orient FA Cup game in 2016.

I got a bit distracted on that day twenty years ago…..
Strictly speaking Saturday was actually the 21st anniversary of the last time we scored 6 but amazingly enough we did also play on that fateful day 11/9/2001, even though games scheduled for the following day were postponed

Yep, Grimsby away in the League Cup.

6-2 (A) Arsenal, 26/3/1921, D1

Bit of trivia about the above 2 games:

The win at Arsenal was our only away win of the season, and one of only 6 matches we won in a 42 game season. We stayed up in 20th place - 2 relegated - by 4 points. We drew 18 games.

The Newcastle game comes up occasionally on here due to its bizarre start: we were 4-0 up after 8 minutes.

Wow, must have been that season's equivalent of last season's win at Old Trafford, but more spectacular. Maybe Arsenal took us for granted.

Great stuff.

Another curiosity I came across while putting this together is that 2 months after we defeated Man City to record our first ever 6-2 League win in 1912, the other Manchester club came to the Lane. We won 6-1; very nearly a strange sort of double.

I was there. It was unreal!

Not old enough to recall any of those ((home) fixtures but was at the Slumderland away - (afore I lived here)
Many of their fans of that vintage still wax lyrical about Sabella’s performance that day & its not uncommon to hear folk state he was the best (opposition?) player they ever saw !
Recall they offered £600k which we declined afore later flogging him to the Dirties for a third less ?

Seem to remember we lost 6-2 at Arsenal sometime in the mid sixties.

The trouble is, after Saturday's result, we've seen the Promised Land and will now expect them to score six every match.

(Cheap publicity for the 60 Years Ago thread)
I have just posted the report for the corresponding Saturday in 1961. Chelsea away, 1-1 at half-time, lost 6-1. Let in 5 in the second half in 1961, scored 5 in the second half in 2021. I was hoping to find similar for 1901, but it was only a 3-1 win!

Here are the defeats:

2-6 (A) Bolton, 14/1/1895, D1
2-6 (A) West Ham, 14/4/1925, D1
2-6 (A) Bolton, 14/3/1931, D1
2-6 (A) Manchester Utd, 26/5/1947, D1
2-6 (A) Portsmouth, 9/10/1954, D1
2-6 (A) Arsenal, 6/11/1965, D1
2-6 (A) Sunderland, 25/4/1979, D1

Sunderland was div 2, just before we got relegated to div 3 for the first time in our history.
