5th November - Relegated Clubs

Thought i'd check over the last 10 years (including this season) which 3 clubs were in the relegation zone on today's date and who eventually went down. So here goes (points at this stage in brackets). Teams in BOLD went down.

So in summary over the previous 9 seasons ON THIS DATE...
  • At least 1 of the relegated clubs has been in the relegation zone
  • In 7 of the previous 9 seasons - 2 of the relegated clubs occupied the relegation places
  • Blackpool occupied the highest position (9th)
  • Burnley have been relegated after accumulating the highest number of points (15)
I don't want to say what i'm thinking in case the footballing gods are watching. But there is a LONG way to go!
 



Interesting, thanks. I wonder what those who survived did to survive? Many who escaped then went down the next year.

I reckon it’s going to be 3 from the current bottom four.

Everton - don’t rate the manager, players (and fans) think they’re better than they are.
Southampton - Can’t see them pulling it around.
Norwich - They’ve got Pukki but that’s it, stop him and you’ve stopped them. Weak squad, too many injuries to key players.
Watford - Strangely enough I think they‘re the ones to pull it around and escape at Everton’s expense.

United - at the risk of tempting fate...solid mid table, perhaps top ten.

No way will Everton go down. Players might think they’re better than they are but they’re still too good to go down. Silva will be out after the next bad result and someone will come in pick them up.

Watford fan I work with is already resigned to Championship football next season. Reckons they are truly woeful.
 
Let see where we are on the 1st Jan 2020 then do the same again

Few weeks back I'd put us down for 28 points at that stage and I don't see it changing ( could be even a few more now) 30

I'm guessing the bottom 5 or 6 won't change to much over the next 8 or so games

Watford’s already blinked and switched their manager and it hasn’t really improved them. They didn’t have a returning manager bounce.
Having said that, I can see their owners pulling the trigger again if they don’t like what they see - seem pretty ruthless.
I still expect Newcastle to implode without Rafa

Love to see Everton go down agree mate false people who claim they deserve to be in the premier, when in reality they just a bunch of deluded thieves

I dislike this sentiment of "no way will an established clubs go down"....

do we really expect Everton not to be relegated at least once over next 100 years? Eventually it will happen to even the best of them and no reason it cant be this season.

Can you do the same thing, but for position and points for Champoins League places, so it's more relevant to us? ;)

Ok, I'll do one tomorrow and see how many teams 8 PTS clear of relegation went on to get relegated. The answer is zero BTW.

Blackpool in 9th and Burnley on 15pts were only 4 & 5 PTS above the drop respectively in their given seasons.

The Blackpool season is most similar to this season. 8pts clear puts you in 5th

It might be the same time of year, but in that table all the teams have played only 10 games. In other words, one game fewer than has been played so far this season.

Last week, after 10 games we were only 5 points clear of the relegation places.

I've also checked this, suggests United should be alright. We also have a positive goal difference.

I believe Blackpool had 14 after eleven matches in 2009-2010 but then went on a great run and were looking very comfortable at season half point before collapsing from January onwards

Yes. The season is a long run. I think from bitter experience we all know it's not done till it's done.

After 11 games Blackpool were 12th, 4pts clear. 8pts clear would still have you in 5th that season.
 
I like this thread.It helps to answer the niggling fear that we are just another promotion bounce team and could sink just as quickly. The historical evidence shows that our points performance in this prem league season makes that unlikely and that ties in with the evidence in front of your eyes - we haven't been lucky, we have matched everyone and it looks sustainable.

Not suggesting they’ll never go down (although they’ve been in the top flight since 1954) but it won’t be this season.

They have a good group of players (mainly internationals) but they’re just underperforming. If they’re still in the shit by January they have spending power. They’re a big enough club to get a decent manager in when they inevitably sack Silva.
 



Newcastle, Norwich & Soton for the drop.

I am not being a pessimist here, but I think it will be closer than what we hope for relegation. We will stay up, but i still reckon 14th/15th place, the reason why is we do not look too good on squad depth.

I can see another repeat of our 17/18 Championship season... where injuries to key players catch up on us in latter half of season and we drop points. (but then we go on to get 2nd place the next season 😁)

January TW 2020 will be a key point in the season, strengthen in Defence and WB's and we hopefully solve this issue and i don't see why we cannot plump for top 10.
