My Norwich supporting schoolmate came to my house that weekend and we watched the match at Bramall Lane. Cardiff scored with a few minutes left. Soon after a pitch invasion ended the game prematurely, Blades finished 12th place which was the lowest league placing in our history at the time

I remember that in the end I was quite pleased (or maybe 'relieved' is a more appropriate word to use!) with our 12th place finish, because most of that season had been a struggle. A foretaste of what was to come in the following season.

12th place makes it seem as though we were comfortably mid table, but we really weren't!

Blackpool ended up taking the last relegation spot and they had only 3 fewer points than us.

I think we were saved by our home form which held up pretty well for most of the season bar the odd blemish - one being the 1-5 thrashing by Bolton.

By the time we played Cardiff I think we were safe, courtesy of a rare away win in the previous match at Notts County.
