I had a great unbeaten record as a kid being taken to games early on and a defeat to Leeds was my 1st loss. Might have been this game although I notice we also lost 0-2 later in the season. I seem to remember Duncan McKenzie scored for them if anyone can remember.

30th August 1975.

One thought always strikes me about the South Stand when I go to the lane now - it looks a mess with all the banners and sponsorship crap all over it, and the hotel next to it.

this is a real shame. It wasn't always thus. Simon Inglis used to say in his Football grounds books that the design and the space of the car park in front allowed us to have one of the most impressive modern frontages on any main stand, and he was right.

To Darren
What time was ground opened?
What was the crowd?
And finally can you name them?
;)

Brian Clough (manager of L**ds for 44 days in 1974) signed McKenzie from Forest in Summer 1974. The scorer of the 2nd goal for L**ds in the August 1972 was a penalty by Johnny Giles at the Kop end. Cant remember who scored their first. My family were on holiday at Filey that week but my dad drove down to York to see Brigadier Gerard (his first defeat in 2 or 3 years) finish 2nd to Roberto in the Benson & Hedges Gold Cup race. I hate horse racing but this was quite memorable! After the race we went down to the Lane to watch the defeat against L**ds and then after that we went back to Butlins in Filey!

I agree. The giant red and white tetris style blocks look tacky. I know you have to have sponsorship etc and that is inevitable but the frontage does not have the appeal it used to. Don' t like the way it says 'Blades' and the over use of colour.

Liked it better in the mid to late 80's than it is now with the simple Sheffield United logo just lit up when at night.

Hate horse racing? Shame on you, Silent. It's up there with football, for me. Anyway, that defeat by Roberto was the only defeat of Brigadier Gerard's eighteen-race career, not just the first in two or three years. You saw a great horse that day, unsurpassed at a mile until the incomparable Frankel came along recently.

Of the seventies side, Ted Hemsley's love of the turf is well-known but Bill Dearden took an interest as well. I remember finding out that he was injured and not playing in a particular game when I nipped into that Ladbrokes shop near the Shoreham Street/John Street junction beforehand and saw him in the corner about ten to three clutching a betting slip and listening to the commentary on a novice hurdle at Kempton.

As soon as the SUFC board found out how much Arthur Rowley loved Horse Racing, they regretted giving him the manager's job!

He owned a horse called Tern Eran. I remember him being interviewed about it in the Football League Review while he was United manager.

Hodgy's autobiography was pretty scathing about Rowley's obsession with horse racing. Given my liking for the sport, I can hardly regard it as a character flaw myself.

It's crazy how many programmes my dad has.
Even ones that have nothing to do with united.
Nuneaton borough anyone?!?!
They'll all be mine one day.
