Incredibly, considering we had 4 points from 16 games before then, we then gained 30 points from the following 13, including 7 wins on the bounce. Ironically it was Forest who then ended that little run in a drab 2-0 defeat at the City Ground.

I thought it was a draw at Wimbledon that ended the winning run? The one with Fashanu’s handballs.

My favourite ever Blades game. Seems incredible to me now, but I had remained convinced all season that we would get out of it. What happened to my youthful optimism?

It's mad. I'd been going to see us for a while before this game, maybe 5 or 6 years, but l have no recollection of a sense of doom around this season. Perhaps, having been a Blade, since the back end of Porterfield's time, I'd already become numb to the pain of The Lane.

I remember Vinnie Jones playing for us that season. He was a bit of a thug but probably contributed to our recovery and staying up.

Can anyone imagine him being transferred to Chelsea now?

Correct! My mistake. After the 7 wins was the infamous draw v Wimbledon, the win v Luton (Glyn Hodges flying header after length of the pitch move) 2 defeats v Forest and Arsenal, and then we beat QPR to secure safety, unbelievably with 4 matches to spare

Who was at Luton Boxing Day for the game after Forest?, a 1-0 win on plastic, Deano
It was the time when away fans were banned, but a few got in.

I went to that forest game, it was a cracking atmosphere. Pitch invasion though, for a league win - it shows how much it meant!

I was there with my dad. I borrowed a membership card from a Luton fan at work. He asked me to promise that I wouldnt cheer if we score. I promised him but my dad and I cheered when Deane scored but didnt tell my workmate when I gave him the membership card back :)

Yes me and a few pals got in thanks to the home fans selling us tickets they told us where to go and stand and asked us not to cause trouble. There were quite a few blades there.

During the 16 games we couldn’t win I remember us singing ‘ We’ll win again , don’t know where don’t know when ‘ to the Vera Lynn song , typical gallows humour of the time .. and when we beat Forest ‘ Were gonna win league & now your gonna believe us ‘ 😂😂 can you imagine that now.. fuck me there’s fans who are suicidal if we’re drawing at half time !

I took someone on the kop who had never been and was sceptical to the rescheduled Derby game on FACup 4th round day iirc. Was is Shilton who had a right game? mostly thinking it would be a 0v0 until we scored late on in front of us and the lot went off. She understood after that.

Yes! Can't stand the modern "fans" singing "we're fucking shit..." or "we've had a shot...." to the same boring tune! I always remember going 3-0 down away at Norwich and the home fans singing "sacked in the morning" to which we responded with a raucous "One Dave Bassett!".
