Let's not forget Norwood's contribution to this vastly improved aspect of our game .

His positional sense , reading of the game and availability to collect the ball from defenders are all of the highest order and help take the pressure off the CB ' s .

In this respect , although physically different , he reminds me a lot of the great Jim Iley .

Agree totally about Norwood. My memories of Iley are a bit hazy to say the least: would he have played a pass like the one to Billy which led to McGoldrick's chance early on?

Was going to mention Norwood because he’s been brilliant this season, one of our most influential players.
But he’s not much better that Coutts at his best who was also brilliant last season playing a similiar game.

Whereas Henderson is a huge upgrade on Blackman
And Egan is a huge upgrade on the excelllent Stearman.

Clarke was the 2nd striker/ target man last season but McGoldrick is definitely an upgrade. He has more intelligence with some great link play. Duffy was the player to link midfield with attack but now we also have McGoldrick who can link midfield to attack.

Totally agree, our defence looks a solid unit. Henderson rarely has many saves to make.

Also think McGoldrick cleverness has taken some of the pressure off Duffy who was our sole player with creativity.

McGoldrick's helped with the creativity and ball retention. The comparison would be with Clarke of last season. Whether he's improved us defensively I'm not sure. There's his ball retention and dropping into deeper positons but then Clarke's physicality and work rate last season was exceptional. But McGoldrick is certainly no lightweight when it comes to the physical side, he's strong and brave. He's impressed me that way.

Possibly not quite as brilliant as that was , but an ability carry balls out of defence and distribute long accurate passes was one of his strengths .
