3 At The Back

i think more of a 3 4 2 1

Freeman and Lafferty making a 5 when defending and a 5 when attacking.

It all depends how the players take to it.
If you're fullbacks are flying forward, great but if not you're just playing 5 at the back in a division that really doesn't warrant that.
It's like when we play 3 up top, let's be fair two of them end up on the wings so you end up with a packed midfield and one up top.

With Freeman and Hussey/Lafferty it seems a logical idea. I could see it working as long as we get the 3 in central midfield right. I'd go with Fleck, Bash and Scougall.
We flirted with this idea before but it didn't stick, was it with Adkins? anyway I like the idea of 3 cb's since most full backs are more like wingers in the modern game, they might has well be deployed has wingbacks.

I always think you need the centre of a three man CB to be a commander, who reads the game well, Tony Adams did it well when Hoddle was England manager.

Not sure we have that sort of player in the squad.

As long as we don't stick Done at LWB again it might work.

Hmmmm .... disagree there mate ..... Scougal is a waste of a shirt as there's no end product.

Its probably the only time I would play Coutts ...... in a 3 man midfield with wing backs either side .....

So I would go:

Moore

Wilson Landell O'Connell

Freeman Lafferty as wing-backs

Basham / Coutts / Fleck

Clarke / Lavery

UTB & FTP

Clarke is out injured

I agree mate. Modern full backs seem to attack more than they defend nowadays anyway so it makes sense. I think Brayford would of been better suited to that system as well (we'll never know now obviously).

I was including Scoogs I'm there as I couldn't think of any other attacking midfielder we've got. Thinking about it again though, I'd probably replace Scougall with Duffy who I think would be decent in there. As for Coutts, I'm not convinced him and Fleck will work together. I may be wrong though (I usually am)!!

I would not take it as a defo that he will play 3 centre mids.
I am convinced we will go 3 4 2 1, the 2 wide players in the 4 will supply width going forward

We have the centre halves to play three at the back - Ebanks-Landell, Wright and O'Connell is a good balance, but we don't have the wing backs.

Your wing backs need to have really good stamina and excel going forward. Our wing back options are full backs who can contribute going forward, not players who can single handedly take responsibility for providing your width/wide threat. Hussey's the most natural option and he's hardly outstanding. Freeman on the right lacks the stamina but does have a bit of attacking craft, still a bit of a square peg in a round hole though.
I'd much rather play wingers out of position as wing backs than play full backs out of position at wing back. The more challenging element of that role is attacking, and wingers are obviously more natural at that.

Much more fluid system 3:5:2. And with the players now in the squad, I suspect it's here to stay.
