in a Championship Play Off final. Sounds familiar

Yeah well at least Reading tried to mount some sort of comeback which is more than we can ever be bothered to do when it comes to a Play Off final.

Slightly unfair, we pummelled Wolves for 20 minutes of the second half but alas like today the damage had been done.

Aye pummelled not for long and missed a penalty.

We are beyond useless or just cursed.

I seem to remember the Wolves Keeper got Man of the Match in that game.

We had a penalty saved
A free kick tipped onto the post.
Another penalty for handball on the line turned down.

Had Brown scored the first penalty it could have been so so different...

Especially in the context of all that had happened before during That Season(tm)

Wolves knew what we'd done to Forest and the way we'd come from behind against so many top teams that year - any glimmer of a comeback and we'd have been rocking and they'd have shit themselves.

Then again, if Warnock had played McCall and Windass hadnt done a shit in the 18th hole......

I still maintain that had that pen gone in we would have won that game - 2 goals to make up in 43 mins.

From memory:

Grimsby (H) - 1 down with 10 to play, won 2-1
Wolves (A) - 1 down in 35 mins, 3-1 up 15 mins later
Brighton (A) - 2-0 with 20 left, won 4-2
Leeds (H) - no explaination needed
Liverpool (H) - no explaination needed
Forest (H) - no explaination needed

Plus a number of last minute winners...

Really wanted Reading to take the smug look off the welsh fans faces.

Im glad Swansea won having spent three years there but I remember when I first arrived in 1999 all the Welsh football fans supported an English club. Two of my best mates who went yesterday used to walk around campus in Everton and Spurs shirts. Since the Swans have been resurgent those shirts have hit the back of the wardrobe and they get very annoyed when I ask them which end theyll be stood in at Goodison or White Hart Lane next season.

I reckon had we not beaten Ipswich in the FA Cup we may very well have caught Leicester. We had a number of fatigued performances towards the end of that season.

Trouble was, Brownie put every penalty in exactly the same spot. A bit of video-watching made him missing one inevitable.

Anyway, however the press dress up the play-off final (see it's now worth £90m) it's a poisoned chalice. Swansea will spend most of the money on players and agents, they will have one foot in relegation by Christmas and the refs will bend over backwards to their favoured clubs. 'Twas ever thus...

I think around 70% of pens are scored - Brown took (I think) 9 over the two seasons 2002-03 and 2003-04 and scored 8 - an 89% success rate. - so his method was a pretty good one.

It's typical United that the one he missed was the most important one - he could have missed the one v Bradford at the Lane a month previously when we were already 2-0 up in a game that was meaningless anyway :-(

We must have the shittest record in POF compared to any other club.

We're not far behind in Semi Finals for the main cup comps either.

We must have the shittest record in POF compared to any other club.

Our 3 defeats in playoffs for a PL place is a record worst. But there are a fair number of clubs who have a worse record than our zero promotions in five tries. Preston have the worst record - no promotions in 8 attempts.

Forest have an awful record in another way, reaching 4 playoffs but losing in the semis each time.

as for FA Cup semis, our record of no wins in the last four attempts is beaten by, oddly, Spurs, who have lost their last 5 FA Cup semi finals.

Officially shit then.

No chance, there are loads of teams with far worse records than ours.

I refer you to Revo's post just above inwhich he confirmed

However, I am not convinced that Preston have been in that many finals - even though they have been in play offs 8 times compared to our 5.

Our record of 3 Champ POF with 3 defeats and no goals scored is the worst record of any team reaching said finals.
We bottle it more than Coca Cola. We just choke on the coke.
