When's the draw for the next round?
Saturday at midday.
Quickie match report:
Huddersfield Town 1 - 2 Sheffield United
League Cup:
United made seven changes to the team which despatched Blackpool on Saturday, which Chris Morgan the most notable, returning from concussion sustained against QPR. Paddy Kenny was given a rest in the Blades goal with Derek Geary also making a start in the defence. Midfield saw the biggest upheaval with David Cotterill, Matt Spring and David Carney looking to secure a first team place alongside Michael Tonge while Blackwell decided to go with height up front, former Terrier Jon Stead partnering Darius Henderson.
While the home side wore black armbands to show their respects for the passing of a local journalist, the Blades probably ought to have worn face masks and black and white striped tops as we robbed the victory from a side who outplayed us for eighty long and arduous minutes.
Danny Cadamarteri was causing Sun Jihai problems right from the outset, while Gary Roberts’s early statement of intention flew straight into Bennett’s arms. Luke Beckett was also looking to cause an upset against his former team, latching on to a forward ball only to be denied by a decisive Bennett.
It was becoming increasingly obvious that the Blades had no bite in midfield and that Huddersfield were bossing the game. We were slow to clear our lines from corners as Huddersfield piled on the pressure. Our first real opening came from a Sun throw in on the left which fell to Stead on the edge of the box. He crossed to Cotterill on the right wing whose shot could only go back the way it came, firing well across the face of the goal. As ever, this sparked a Hudderfield counter attack and we only regained possession with a free kick on the edge of our box.
The referee appeared to be on a different planet, and awarded a free kick on the edge of the Blades box for a “push” he couldn’t have possibly seen, looking the complete opposite direction as he was. Robbie Williams hit the wall and Nathan Clarke should have probably done better with his header from the resulting corner, knocking the ball wide from close range.
Henderson was then booked for trying to head the ball… I’m not even going to try and explain that one and I doubt the referee can justify it either. The Blades were further inflamed when Cotterill was blatantly barged over on the right of the Huddersfield box with no free kick given. Carney and Tonge were guilty of wasting some good possession in the opposition half, first Carney firing wide and then Tonge lofting in soft and useless corners and free kicks.
It was only a matter of time before Huddersfield took a deserved lead. Cadamarteri won a corner off Sun which Roberts knocked to Michael FLYNN who fired goalwards. Bennett would have probably claimed it had Tonge not deflected it further to the left with his head.
They should have probably had a second when Cadamarteri was left in acres of space but shot wide while the Blades had the ball cleared off the line at the other end, a case of too many people trying to walk the ball into the net. Increasingly, Cotterill was guilty of trying to be too clever on the wing when the simple ball would have been more effective, often conceding possession.
The last few minutes of the half probably summed it up. Clarke fell on his arse and was awarded a free kick with no one in touching distance of him while at the other end, Tonge managed to drift a free kick miles wide of the goal. Instead of letting Tonge take free kicks on the edge of the box, they ought to just give the opposition the goal kick – saves time and effort!
Danny Webber replaced Stead at half time but the second half was much the same as the first for thirty five minutes. Carney made no friends in the Blades crowd for neshing out of chasing a loose ball and no one was upset to see him being replaced by Kyle Naughton, making his second senior start.
Kilgallon was becoming increasingly frustrated by his side’s performance and started making forays into the Huddersfield box. A good run produced a poor cross from him but the travelling fans were happy to see at least one person in red and white stripes making an effort before the Blades switched to a 3-4-3 formation, replacing Geary with Billy Sharp.
The Blades finally got hold of the ball in the last ten minutes of the game and from the first real bit of pressure they applied, HENDERSON scored – Matthew Glennon got fingertips on the ball but it was powerful enough to hit the back of the net.
A rather fortunate turn in the box by Kilgallon lead to the second goal after he rode the challenges of a number of defenders. Killa looked down, realised in amazement that he still had the ball and then laid off to NAUGHTON on the right. His shot had a flavour of Hudderfield’s opener, deflecting off Robbie Williams to beat the keeper much to the joy of the United fans and players alike.
Glennon attempted to atone for the goal by going forward for the late Hudderfield corners, but the whistle soon blew. Huddersfield have the right to feel robbed while some of our players ought to think themselves lucky they’re getting a wage for that performance.
