Harsh on Monty. Certainly not the best with the ball, but he had an unbelievable engine and broke up a lot of attacks (sadly at both ends). Not a player you could ever accuse him of hiding, he was involved in all of our play - for better, or for worse.

Had Viera in his pocket in one match I recall

Went to Oz to play for Central Coast Mariners and is now assistant coach there.

A Leeds lad but a Blade through and through.

I should know, I chatted to him often enough in the David Lloyd Club

No doubt the piss-takers will be out in force when they see this headline from an interview in December.

Being a top player doesn’t mean you’ll be a good manager and not being a top player doesn’t mean you’ll be a crap manager. Klopp wasn’t a great player, Mourinho was barely a player, same with Wenger.

You think he was a top player, then?

;)

I know what you're saying; I was merely reporting what I'd seen

I think he's too nice to be a manager tbf

People remember too readily some of the turgid football we played at the time and the part a player like Monty, who was fairly poor on the ball, played in that style. In terms of his defensive ability he was outstanding. I could never dislike a player like him. Not like some of the dross we've had that clearly that weren't any good and didn't give a shit to go with it.

If only we had signed Hammond and Woolford early in their careers, i'm sure they would've reached the milestone.

Monty was a very important player for the Blades. He broke up so many opposition attacks, always gave 100%.

Yes , in terms of anticipating danger and breaking up opposition attacks , Monty was one of the best I’ve seen playing for us ( Trevor Hockey being the very best ) .

What happened after he’d done that is another story altogether , but if he had been more capable with the ball at his feet we wouldn’t have been able to hold on to him anyway .

Nothing but respect for the guy .

Pretty sure we wouldn't have gone down in 2007 if he hadn't had to be stretchered off at Villa. I'd expected him to look totally outclassed in the Premier, but he upped his game and didn't look out of place. His commitment to the cause was matched only by Morgs.

I remember the Preston play off in 2009 when he single handedly won the game for us. He was everywhere on the pitch and that was one of the best individual performances I've seen from a United player. He was the only midfielder who turned up in the final at Wembley, but sadly him and a great defence weren't enough to beat an average Burnley side.

He could be frustrating and give the ball away, but on balance he was a very solid player for us.

After reading those stats.... With only a handful of subs available for selection and spare seats on the bench, we ought to give a Monty a one game contract?! Just so we can give him his 350th appearance, albeit for the last 30 secs of injury time!! 😉 He's only a year older than Jags 😂

Yeah, that rubbish he played 349 games, picked by every single manager he played under.
I once went into the club shop in the Warnock days to buy some merchandise. Monty, Jagielka and Robert Page were all in the shop messing about. Jags and Monty were serving people behind the counter and giving autographs . I had a good laugh with them and thought Monty was the soundest one out of all 3. On my way out the team was getting on the coach ready to go to the away game and Monty give me the thumbs up as he was getting on. He gave his all on the pitch and is a top lad off it. More than I can say with my experience with Killgallon.

I am more surprised tonge got that many appearances. It was clear managers loved monty.

His name is nick!!!! I remember him scoring against Blackpool and the lane went mental!!!

Unfortunately, so many of our attacks were broken down by his splay-footed distribution ;)

I'm being a tad harsh there, but you line 'um up and I'll knock 'um in!

As many have said on this thread the defensive side of his game was excellent. I always thought Warnock got his tactics wrong with Monty and Tongey. He tried to get them to do both sides of the game when they should have specialised in what they were good at. He should have told Monty, you win the tackles, break up play, give the ball to Tongey and don't venture too far over the halfway line. Tongey you just concentrate on attacking in the opposition's half and don't drop back too far behind the halfway line.
