It occured to me after Satruday's game that a visiting player scoring 3 times is a rare thing at the Lane. I can't think of it being done since 1984-5, when Jimmy Quinn did it for Blackburn at the end of the season (and Gary Lund did it for Grimsby earlier the same season).

That strikes me as an awful long time to go without anyone getting a hatrick for a visiting team at the Lane - it's certainly been done at, say, Old Trafford and Anfield in the intervening years. Am I missing someone or was Jimmy Quinn really the last person to do this?

Here's one for you, who was the last player to score 4 in one game against Man Utd at Old Trafford?

would that be Martin Peters?
Nope. It was a game that saw George Best and Bobby Charlton score 2 each and still lose. Bit of a present-day link to the Blades. Anyone?

I think, although I'm not sure, he's the only player to score 4 against Man U at Old Trafford.

I thought Bridges had too, but clearly he didn't. What I remember with absolute certainty is that he made Steve Bruce look so appallingly bad he never played again.

That was also the match the week that Dean Saunders decided to head to join Deano at Souness's Benfica. Maybe we should get Souness in after all - he has an excellent record of convincing our players that they should play for him, so it could be the best way to get Kilgallon to sign a new contract.

Hmmm... then you know something I don't. With my curiosity now aroused I tried kooking it up and can find only this

How many opposition players have scored hat-tricks at Old Trafford? And who were they? asked Marc Beauge last week.

So far the roll of honour stands at three. Stephen Martin is one of many who remembers Dennis Bailey's brilliant hat-trick during QPR's 4-1 New Year's Day demolition of United in 1992. (And apparently he's still banging them in for Forest Green.)

Another player to accomplish the feat is Kevin Mabbutt, who John Scotchmer says scored a hat-trick at Old Trafford for Bristol City when they were in the old First Division (late 70s to early 80s).

But surely no-one else has managed to match Martin Peters, who, as Jez Simmonds points out, once bagged all four goals as Tottenham walloped United 4-1 at Old Trafford early in 1973.

Looking forward to the answer now as I love football trivia

It was for our S6 cousins in August 1968. Jack Whitham. Now chief scout at BL. :) Thanks for playing, Vistoma! :D

Edit: Ah, may have thrown a curve ball in there by accident. Don't think it was at Old Trafford :(:(:(

I think the record is the only player to score 4 against Man Utd. sorry :(

I am pretty certain that was at Hillsborough - and a check on soccerbase confirms that it was.

Bugger! There's a reason I don't normally get involved in these stats quizzes!!!

I like them. Here is another one for everyone.

What feat did John McAlle perform that (as far as I know) no another United player has performed?

My all time favourite (which was quite recently) is what highly unlikely feat did Andy Gray achieve in the 05-06 season?

Gray double

Andy Gray scored on the first day of the Championship for us against Leicester and the first day of the Premiership (had signed for Sunderland in the mid week). I know it was the first Champ day of the season but not sure whether it was the first Prem goal of the season?

Brian Deane scored in the first league game of every season from 1988-89 to 1993-94 (the first 5 seasons for United and the last for Leeds) and I often wondered if that was some sort of record.

Incidentallly, Deane also scored in his first game for United in:

Premier League (v Man Utd (h) 15/8/92
Old Division 1 (v Liverpool (h) 25/8/90
Old Division 2 (v WBA (a) 19/8/89)
Old Division 3 (v Reading (a) 27/8/88)
FA Cup (v Mansfield (a) 19/11/88)
League Cup (v Hartlepool (a) 30/8/88)

Which must be unique for a United player.

Yep, first goal of each. :)

He won the first division, second division, third division and fourth division titles in his career?

No, the answer is that (I think) is that he is the only United player whose only goal for the club came when he was playing for another team (his OG was the United goal in the 1-2 defeat at Wolves on 9/2/77 - he never scored when he played for United in 1981).

Darren, if i remember rightly, McAlle only played for the first half of the season. Any idea why he didn't figure in the second half, as we seemed to defend okay for most of the time when he was in the side. Was he dropped, or injured?

Not sure. His last game was v Aldershot at the Lane on 5/12/81. He played as centre back alongside Kenworthy. Due to the weather we did not then have a game until 2/1/82, when Kenworthy played alongside Houston at centre back, with McAlle dropping out.

I think he may well have been injured as there would seem to have been no reason to drop him. Whatever, he didn't get his place back and was loaned and then sold to Derby.
