Was bored with all the transfer speculation and got to wondering how our spend 12 years ago might equate in today’s money. As a rough indication of what our budget could be :

What do we reckon this motley selection would cost in today’s money? (2006/07 Fees taken from soccer base - great resource fwiw)

Claude Davis - £2.5m
Christian Nade - free
Leighterwood - £0.6m
Hulse - £2.2m
Lee Tie - free
Ian Bennett- free
Kazim Richards - £0.5m (undisclosed but I seem to remember that being the fee)

January

Killgallon - £1.75m
Stead - £0.75m
Seck - free
Shelton - £1.85m
Fathi - £0.7m

I make that a spend of just over £10m for the season

What do that lot go for in today’s money?

I think you’ve got 2 promising young defenders (Davies and killa ) £5-6m a pop?

One of the better championship strikers in hulse £8-10m?

Lower league player in maxim- Richards - £1m?

‘Decent’ championship midfielder in leighterwood £3m

Out of favor PL striker in stead - £3m?

Fathi - £1m assuming foreign market hasn’t inflated in the same way

Shelton - £3m - as above.

At the lower end of the scale that’s £29m.

Do we spend more or less than that this time?

Worse strikers than Hulse would cost you £10m these days.

I'm looking at Tyrone Mings for £26m and thinking Claude Davies might be worth £8-10m, got to the Playoff final with Preston, so that's a couple of mill.

I remember Hulse and Davis cost £3m a piece and Kazim was definitely less than that. I remember being shocked at how low the fee was. Sure it was around 250-300k.

Kilgallon, highly-rated young English centre back, from a Yorkshire rival, easily £15m+.

Hulse would comfortably cost £12m in today’s money. Claude Davis probably £6m. Taking their stock at the time and applying it to today.

Looking at that it just reminds me how good Warnock was with relatively limited resources. Some quality signings in there from experience to youth gambles that paid off.

Quite similar to our Wilder in some respects. He certainly doesnt deserve the stick he gets from some on here.

Id disagree somewhat with the comment about Warnock. He did at times do great with limited resources, but out of the Premier League signings in that list above i'd argue only Hulse, Stead and CKR had any positive impact on that season. Killa did have an impact but after NW had left, he was injured when signed and only played last 5/6 weeks

In the promotion and prem seasons he had loads of players / budget that he wasted in addition to the above, i.e. Horsfield, Lucketti, Akinbiyi, Nalis, Flitcroft, Sommeil, lads that had no impact whatsoever and were on cracking money. I think Horsfield / Lucketti got 2/2.5 year contracts out of United.

I think looking at the players there and similar players who are going now, then multiply by about 4 or 5.
