In summer, i would be looking at Jon Stead (Bristol City) hasn't played since January. We all know what he is capable of and put in a great shift for our premier league season; and Ross Mccormack (Leeds United) who hasn't started for Leeds as far as I'm aware, but was signed for only 600k (i think) and was an incredible talent 2 years ago.

Surely these 2 could do a reyt job for us next year and wouldnt be too expensive would they?

I liked Jon Stead but I think we will be setting our sights far lower sadly

He didn't sign for blackpool last summer due to them not matching his 12k a week demands. Much as I liked stead, there's no way he's worth that much!

I'd be surprised if we sign anyone from the Chumpionship or higher in the Summer. We may pick up the odd out of contract player but a lot will depend on who is shipped out and what kind of wages are freed up.

What's our wage ceiling going to be next season £5K.....less........?

I liked Stead as well but it sounds like he's done the same thing at Bristol City as he's done at every other club (including ours). He set off like a rocket scoring here there and everywhere for them and a mate of mine (Bristol City fan) was raving about him. He now tells me he went totally off the boil and looks fairly average.

To me he'll always be a player of great potential that couldn't do it consistently over a long period. In other words a decent player that could have been a very good player. He seems to up his game when he moves to a new club and then loses his way.

It's idealistic but simply not possible sheffielder. You can't tell me you would turn away Jon Stead because he's 28? or Ross Mccormack because he's 24? Surely players are in their prime at 27/28 and can't be a bad thing signing them. It's the player rather than their age surely?

I agree that they should be of a certain age, maybe anyone under 29, but i feel that 23 is very optimistic. I rekon QPR only have 1 player under the age of 23 (Taraabt) in their starting line up but they aren't half bad are they?

I thought he did well for us when he was played as one of two central strikers in a 4-4-2. However, from what I recall, Robson played him out wide and that's when he became less effective.

It is very possible. We are not going to have any money to spend this summer so what 24+ player are we going to get especially in the lower leagues. Any 28 year old we get next season is just not going to be worth the wages.. Doyle, Collins are just two examples. Any signings we should make should be youngsters from the lower leagues or loan signings from top 4 premierleague youngsters for experience. Anything else is taking up a slot of someone we could be developing for ourself

I understand your point, but i have 2 in reply.

1. Collins and Doyle have been poor, most can agree on that. But my point is, they aren't poor because of their age, they just aren't very good footballers, end of.

2. 23 is a very young age in football. I suppose it depends what you are looking for, you can get a 23 year old who is established and has succeeded for a few years at a lower level or a younger player who still needs to learn in the game.

I think everyone can agree Craig Davies would be a great signing. Did you know he's 25? would you turn him away because hes 25? Highly unlikely IMO

Craig Davies is a very good argument, but I see him more the exception than the rule of thumb for the lower leagues.
Maybe 23 is a bit low but I don't think your going to find alot of quality above that age that we can a, afford or b, would be willing to come.

I don't see Davies leaving Chesterfield for us

someone wins the league every year in division three.. err one.. sorry:p.. so there must be the players around somewhere.. look at brighton, they play like brazil.. they must have got cheap players from somewhere?

think ull find mcabe won,t flash the cash, we could well be looking at players in 1st or 2cnd division fo players, on 2 3 or 4 grand a week, top quality players what a thought,

no, thats fair. Don't get me wrong, i am 100% behind getting youth into the team and think we need to be looking at an average age of 22/23 next year. All I'm saying is i hope people don't have a go if we sign someone who's 28, just because of his age. I would be frustrated if we sign anyone in their 30s, but, following my initial point, i would by no means be upset if we signed Jon Stead, just because he's 28!

That's pretty much what i remember as well.

I think he'd be a great front man in league 1 though. But he isn't worth 12k a week.

Highly likely Chesterfield will finish above us next season. Settled, winning team, will probably strengthen in the summer as well.
I think they might do very well next year.
It'll be just like the old days when they used to beat us every year when they had the likes of Danny Wilson and dear old Ernie Moss.
