Sheffield Wednesday Reserves 1 - 2 Sheffield United Reserves
Yes, we braved it and went to Hillsborough and was pleasantly surprised to get in for free to watch a match where the final score flattered the Pigs. This was no close game and don't let them tell you otherwise.
Our back four consisted of three academy graduates and Del Geary yet they were hardly flustered all match. Charlie Tunnard turned Maxime Chanot early on but the French lad recovered well with a strong boot in the right place... and that was about as close to scoring as Wednesday got all first half. Jon Stead and Jordan Robertson were leading the line well and appear to have a good understanding, while Lee Hendrie was looking to get the ball to them as quickly as possible. It was a horrible mistake however, which saw United take the lead. Jamie Hadfield passed the ball back to Richard O'Donnell in the Wednesday goal, who controlled the ball but hesitated on it slightly too long. Robertson ran a good twenty yards and put him under pressure, O'Donnell lost the ball and the challenge saw it trickle over the line.
The Wednesday players, for some inexplicable reason, seemed to be standing off the Blades... giving us plenty of time on the ball and the chance to boss the game. Matthew Spring seems to like having a crack from distance and was unlucky to see a decent effort fizz over the crossbar while Robertson seemed to mishit a shot along the floor but still forced a save from O'Donnell.
The second goal came from the penalty spot. Spring sprang into the box, only to be chopped down and the referee casually pointed to the spot. Stead stepped up and much to the gathered Wednesdayites' sheer delight, the shot was saved, prompting the biggest cheer of the night so far. Oh how we felt for them when the referee ordered a retake, Stead taking no chances and choosing to blast it into the back of the net.
It's at this point that I wrote "piggies are shit" and despite my bias, they really were. Chanot and Matt Lowton were camped out on the halfway line... any forward balls from them were confidently headed clear by the former. Chanot even managed to spark an attack with a ball down the right channel to Robertson who cutback for Stead to shoot straight into the arms of O'Donnell. Nick Montgomery and Spring were bossing the middle of the park, getting stuck in when need be. Most of the time though, our lads only had to wait for the ball to be passed to them by a blue and white shirt. They really were that poor.
Hendrie was keeping himself busy... strolling into the box unimpeded but rather over enthusiastically blasting wide. Keith Quinn on the other side was rather more quiet, but Kyle Naughton was overlapping well with him.
Wednesday's only shot of the half came from Mukhtar Mohammed, but Bennett easily claimed while Leon Lekaj found himself booked for a nasty challenge on Hendrie's shins just before half time.
The second half was a quieter affair by the Blades, who seemed to drop down a gear. There were still plenty of efforts on goal, but they seemed to lack decisiveness and possibly tried to get a bit too fancy. Wednesday even managed to get a goal. Our defence looked on in amazement as Rocky Lekaj shot from distance which Bennett obviously thought was going over, but actually hit the underside of the bar and went in.
Stead further tested both O'Donnell and the crossbar while Hendrie had a late effort straight at the keeper. All in all, a job well done.
