Danny Wilson made three changes from last Saturday's Capital One Cup disappointment with McAllister, Blackman and Cofie coming in for Flynn, Miller and Porter. Miller retained his place in the match day squad sitting on a young bench with Flynn and Porter joining the likes of Cresswell and Montgomery in the stands.

Kicking off towards the Kop, it was a nervy start for both teams as they struggled to sustain possession in the opening minutes. That said, the Blades got off to a dream start when a few minutes in Quinn and Williams put a good move together down the left, with the full back swinging in an inviting cross... McAllister who had clearly been given instruction to drive into the box, got in front of his man and placed a wonderfully controlled volley into the top corner. It's safe to say that despite it coming against a team he's spent some time with, he enjoyed scoring the opener of the Blades 2012/2013 season, celebrating in front of the John Street Stand.

Not long after the goal, a miscue from Collins meant his man got the better of him, but the centre back recovered and blocked the shot. The resulting corner saw the ball flying wide, but it was one of a number of warning shots that kept the Blades fans grounded.

Nick Blackman, who showed a range of useful attributes, was starting to cause trouble and had the beating of his man down the right hand side. The pacey forward looked for the opposite corner of the goal but his shot crept wide. Moments later he looked to get involved again, plucking a Maguire long ball expertly out of the air, but he just couldn't get enough on his attempted flick to his striking partner Cofie.

John Cofie himself had an effort well saved by the visiting keeper as the Blades tried to double their advantage. The Shrews were still very much in the game though and were working hard to close down United. This allowed Blackman to demonstrate his strength, holding off the attentions of four of the visitors before playing the ball to a fellow Blade in the middle of the park.

At times, the midfield were stretched and offering little protection to the back four, Neill Collins having to put in a quality tackle just as they looked to be being overrun. Back down the other end, Stephen Quinn delivered a delightful, teasing cross which Blackman was close to meeting with an attempted diving header.

The visitors twice gave us a scare as first an effort which looked goal-bound was somehow kept out via a combination of their own man and Howard's back post, then the keeper coming to the rescue two or three times as the Blades gave their opponents too much space. The visiting supporters managed a short celebration during the flurry, when Gornell turned the ball home from close range, the Blades were stood still unconcerned as he was clearly offside.

Early in the second half, Quinn won a free kick on the left and supplied Maguire who headed over the bar, from his reaction, the youngster thought he could have done better. Howard was forced into action, routinely collecting a long range effort before a lull in chances.

The Blades were alternating between playing too much in the air to the two new front men and making large numbers of short passes around the edge of the box trying to construct an opening. Some of the home crowd got restless, but it was clear the players had been told to be patient and that keeping possession was the most important thing.

Cofie was tiring and after chasing down a back pass from the visitors he was replaced by Miller.

Howard set Blackman on a run down the right with a long direct kick, the striker got the better of his man and then played a good ball inside to meet the intelligent run of McMahon. The full back calmly skipped further into the area before shooting across the goalkeeper forcing a good save. Miller had his first opportunity shortly after, linking up well with Quinn, but in a busy penalty area his shot was blocked by the body of a defender.

Quinn and McDonald both had efforts from outside the area not far over the bar, but it was down to Howard to ensure the points were secure producing a few confident saves as Shrewsbury looked to grab an equaliser.

Foxy mate. Great write up, but could you do it in standard font, not italics? It's a bit crap for us old duffers to read, that's all.

Good win against a side who if they play like they did today will do well this season. They seem confident ,strong and work very hard. A good team to get out of the way early.
Howard looked good in goal, although his distribution was shocking. Quinn best outfield player today. A lot had good touches but the link up play was lacking and should get better the more they play together.

Like this Foxy. Good with the Pics.

The default font for quotes is italics I'm afraid, I did it that way to differentiate more between quotes and new content. As this is a reproduction of an article on our main site, it's in a quote box. I'll have a look at the quote font if it's harder to read :)

You can also see it in non-italic goodness on the main site - http://www.s24su.com

good report foxy, thanks :)
i thought we looked a little disjointed, but that is to be expected given the number of changes.
have to agree with Boo.. Howard has a mighty kick, but i'd hoped we didn't play like that anymore ie hoof it down the right.. we certainly missed Lowton taking the ball off the keeper and bombing to the half way line with it
Blackman looked a threat for most of the game until we switched off around the 60th minute, prompting the usual last ten minute panic. Cofie should improve, he was knocked off the ball a lot which is presumably why SAF sent him here but still looked a threat. Shrewsbury looked a pretty decent outfit and i reckon they'll surprise a few
Good start

Hmmmm .... I walked away today with a bit of a cynical shake of the head. I thought we were second best for much of the game today and looked less of a team than last season.
Big misses today (other than Ched's explosive power) were the Willo - Lowton combo down the right. McMahon looks unlikely to make any forays down the right flank a la Lowton and Mcallister despite a great finish and plenty of industry doesn't have Willo's class.
Howard was a pleasant surprise, a huge kick and looked safe when called upon.
McMahon unsure on occasions for someone with his pedigree
Williams did ok after his horror show last week and his cross for the goal was good
Collins and Maguire less assured today and give a good working over by Marvin Morgan, their huge and aggressive 10.
Doyle and MacDonald again looked off the pace and didn't dominate like they did on so many occasions last season
As above, Mcallister has industry and gets in good positions in and around the box, but he's not the answer out wide
Quinny did well in patches but I fear we will have to get used to being without him quite soon and these appearances are a bonus for fans and DW as he should really be sat in the stands with Monty & Cressy awaiting a club to relieve us of their wage burden. I suspect DW has persuaded KM to let him play one of them before they go elsewhere.
Blackman, though he faded as the game wore on shows good ability and with the right partner will be a formidable force I believe.
Cofie - raw and showed little against a rugged back four. Needs time and maybe cameos from the bench is the way forward in the short term. I think Porter would be a much better foil for Blackman and give him the room to show his talents better.
Miller came on in the later stages and looked a bit sharper and more aware than Cofie had done.

Shrewsbury were strong, competitive and closed us down in our own third very well. They will feel agrieved at going away pointless after taking the game to us for long stretches.

Very early days I know but I saw little to give me any great encouragement today and I can only hope we improve, unload the big wage burdens and thereby give ourselves a little more manouverability in the transfer market...we shall see....

Grauniad suggests that we had 65% possession. Must be another typo

agree with a lot of what you had said. Not sure if Shrewsbury are a better team than many expected or that we made them look good

Great write up and photos thank you. Think Blackman has got the ability and given time will shine for us!

Is that really the policy? I would have thought it makes more economic sense to play such players for as long as we have them. Unless, of course, their playing bonuses are that enormous....

I know they're yesterday's men for us, but it's actually quite sad seeing honest pros sat in the stand for non-football reasons.
