It has now been 150 days since a striker last scored a league goal for us when Dave Kitson headed in our second against Brentford on 16th April 2013.

How much longer will the drought continue?

Thats a totally meaningless stat. Like saying Accrington Stanley haven't beaten Sheffield United since 1904. Well if we never played each other in 109 years what do you expect?

Had we played a game everyday for the last 150 days it might make sense. But it doesn't. Hence why the hours stat of 19hrs 58mins means something. We have played that length of time. We haven't played 150 days of football (though I appreciate it might feel like it!)

I don't really get your point.

Are you saying then that we're never allowed to use measurements of time in relation to football stats?

Are we not allowed to say that Tony Hibbert has never scored a league goal for Everton because he hasn't played a match for them every day for the past thirteen years?

Ok then, it's been two months since a striker scored. It's still a very sad indictment of the state of our offence...

I agree, but were bad enough as it is without needing to over inflate an issue.

How many years is it since a Scottish winger scored for us? Was ian Bryson the last because Flynn and Murphy don't count because they're apparently not real footballers :)

Cant' argue with that.

Hi PN,

Yes sort of. It's not trying to be pedantic, we use stats like this in everyday life but just think about it, it is meaningless because it is actually misleading. I used the Accrington Stanley hypothetical example to illustrate it. If you hadn't played each other in that time it is a silly statistic. Its use is often used to 'over illustrate a point' and thus misleading. Last weekend they said this is the biggest win Rovrum had had over the Blades since 1956? or something well maybe. But if we had only played them say 10 times a big win in 10 doesn't sound as good as a win of that magnitude in say 57 years!

Had that been Arsenal playing Everton a vaild stat but Aresenal against Hull would give the wrong impression since the clubs have only been in the same league probably 3 seasons?

Good point, but I wonder if there have been any other 150 day stretches in our 125 years history when a striker has failed to score.

I think we are unanimous in the upshot - we are piss poor upfront, and as bad as we've ever been. If we don't address it, we'll be doing something else for the 2nd time in our 125 year history....:(

Mind around that time we beat Newcastle 7-2 5-0 up after 8 minutes. So maybe not :(

6-2 actually :) My granddad John Spencer scored two of the goals. It was new years day 1955. Newcastle won the cup that year.

My Dad and Grandad were running late for that game. By the time my Dad got in the ground, after 2 minutes, United were 1-0 up. My Grandad, who couldn't run as fast, got there after 6 minutes, when it was already 3-0. Then it was 4-0 (not 5-0 scrap) after 8 minutes!

My dad was 10 minutes late for that match. He asked a spectator for the score. "4-0 to United" was the reply. My dad thought the spectator was taking the mickey and told him to "Piss off!" so he walked over to a different spectator who said the same thing!

So just under a day then? Not bad going really :)

By the time we play Wolves next Saturday we'll be up to 165 days.
