Neill Collins made his debut in that game on emergency loan in place of Craig Short, did well enough, and then played one more game as a reward in the following game at home to QPR. That was a disaster – Collins had a mare, Horsfield had an appalling debut, and Ifill missed a pen in a 3-2 loss. I recall there was an implosion on whichever United forum I was on at that time. Collins didn’t feature again that season and was sent back.

Not the first time Warnock did that ahead of a Hillsborough game – Darren Bullock in 2001 was the other I believe, same scoreline too (D’Jaffo and Asaba)

I listened to a podcast about this, I can't remember which one, probs undr the cosh, but some of the players had no idea who bullock was on the team coach on the way to the game

I had my son with me at the QPR match and after 20 mins. He turned to me and said " Dad , this centre half is rubbish " and my reply was " I've never seen a worse performance by a Blades centre half in all the years I've been watching them . He's totally and utterly inept at everything he tries to do "

When he was unsurprisingly sent back the following week I was at least comforted by the fact that , after that performance , I would never again have to see him in a Blades shirt ........

An extra surprise was that our emergency centre-half signed because of the other injuries had an injury himself that he was recovering from. Collins had an ankle infection, had been told he was a week away from full recovery, but we were so desperate that we got him in anyway. I think Morgan had an injury scare ahead of the game that had made us get someone in rather than just rely on moving Jags back from midfield for the game. A bizarre set of circumstances, and within a week Collins had outstayed his welcome...
