What exactly IS this so called momentum? It’s not like we’re a three ton ball being shoved down a hill. We’re a football team. One that lost a couple of games near the start of the season. So if it is down to “momentum” from last season how come it didn’t stop then? Good players, good manager, fantastic tactics, great support, self belief and a never say die attitude is what it’s about.
I think you've answered your own question there.
(i) When a team is doing well, the fans are more likely to get behind the players (and club) even if they make a small mistake. Look over at S6 if you want to see the opposite effect happening.
(ii) Self-belief comes from 'within', of course, but it doesn't do any harm to have a run of 19 wins in 24. It means that the players go out onto the pitch with the feeling that, if they do the same as they've done for the last six months, they're probably going to win. That's a pretty good incentive. That won't be the case for Bolton who, unless they're playing Wednesday, know that they're probably going to lose, even if they put the effort in.
(iii) The never-say-die attitude nearly always comes from past experience. Teams that score late winners often do so in clusters of games. In 2002-03 we had a reputation for late winners ("my lads never know when they're beaten") and that momentum gave the players belief that, even when 2-0 in a play-off semi-final, it was worth putting in an extra 15% of effort, because we'd
experienced the benefits of that in the recent past.
Of course, those things only work with the first three points that you mentioned (good players, good manager and fantastic tactics), but to say that momentum doesn't play any role at all is ignoring a huge psychological part of the game (and life, for that matter).
One thing that I would say is that a good manager can mitigate the effects of 'negative momentum'. At the start of last season, with 1 point from 4 games, it would have been easy for the squad to lack belief and for the crowd to turn against the club. To Wilder's credit, he managed that situation amazingly well, and turned things around. I'd say the same about Dave Basset in 1990-91 when we had 4 points from 16 games.
