Bert has always rated him.

He's going to be one of our best players next season.

I applaud Bert for his willingness to make this case.

I don’t doubt there’s latent talent in Chong. But his output in recent years suggests it’s buried irretrievably deep.

Any highlights reels will show you that Chong plays best in teams that attack at pace with runners in behind. Either finding his runs, and/or him looking to pick out runners.

He's been out of form, granted. He's been in comparison to the much more effective Brooks. But we've also likely played a system that is too slow and ponderous for what suits him most.

I'm probably Wilder but that type of quick breakaway goal he's scored vs. Scotland seems to be exactly the stuff we manage to somehow "coach" out of our players when we've had them here a few months.
I don't get it!

Feck inverting wingers - it's a fool's tactics unless you're so rich that wingers in your squad are strong on their weaker foot

Worked out ok. for Arsenal, though they can afford better players.

Because Arsenal’s wingers operate on the opposite flank to their stronger foot (a left-footed player on the right wing, or a right-footed player on the left), their natural movement is to cut inside onto their dominant foot. This allows them to shoot directly at the far corner or play killer passes into the box

The advantage of having an inverted winger, in tandem with a conventional full back (a la Brooks and Seriki), is that you have the option to pose threats by either cutting inside or getting to the byline.

That's more difficult to defend than, for example, two right footed offensive players on the right wing, who can both be shown inside or two left footed players who can be shown down the line.

Many teams last season, Coventry being the obvious exception, struggled to cope with the variety of threats presented by Brooks and Seriki, when at full flow.

He’s been largely useless for us, but there were definitely some green shoots of recovery towards the end of the season, maybe he could be alright for us and I don’t expect many teams to be that interested in signing him anyway as isn’t he on a decent wedge?

Agreed, especially as he is 26 (27 in December) so not exactly young. Not sure of his salary but we have him for another 3 seasons which isn't the best but if he can turn out and be available as a good championship player, I can see him worth keeping. If we play to his strengths, he was excellent against Derby, although doubtful they will get out of the group, if he plays in 3 games at the World Cup, hopefully that will build his confidence. He seems popular within the squad which is never a bad thing, hopefully he can get onto the front foot and push on.

Different to Hecky who would let Ndiaye and others just go with it.

Hope he somehow has an amazing World Cup and some foolish club takes him off our hands.
If it's an amazing World Cup, to say they have Germany, Ecuador and Ivory Coast in their group, not sure who would be more foolish if we offload. If he plays as an average player, he will still have a good World Cup, with 3 years left on his contract, definitely in the list of possibles to move on although could be a Dutch side that goes in for him as I can't see many other clubs in the Championship forking out £millions.
