A more difficult question to answer, but how many of those players mentioned finished top scorer of the division? Sharp is now one behind Grigg, two behind Ajose, and has every chance to catch them in the remaining games.

Other than Edwards, off the top of my head:

Steve Bull outscored Deane and Agana
Mick Quinn (and possibly others) outscored Deane in 1990 I think
Edwards was second to Kevin Drinkell in 1986, from memory
Jordan Rhodes beat Evans

Edwards was the top scorer in all 4 divisions in 1981-2 - his goal for Hull put him one ahead of Craig Madden, who got 35 for Bury - but Trevor Senior of Reading outscored him in 1983-4 I think.

Arthur Brown in 1904/05

Jimmy Dunne scored 41 goals in 1930/31 season but "Pongo" Waring of Villa scored 49

Dunne set the record, which still stands, of most goals by an Irishman.

He also ended up scoring 30+ 3 seasons in a row. Only Alan Shearer has also done that.

And Ebanks Blake outscored Beattie.

Does anyone have a list of the all time top ten Blades goalscorers?

I'm guessing the top three would be Harry Johnson, Jimmy Dunne and Keith Edwards.

Wikipedia reckons Dunne got 169.

Also does anyone have the list of hat-tricks stretching back to the 70s/80s?

I know Darren posted one a while ago but I can never find it.

Revolution,

I had some critisims of both Beattie and Ched.

Re: Beattie
It was a similar situation to when we had Edwards. It appeared as though the whole team was told, pass to Beattie or look for Beattie. Like Edwards Beattie shot on site and rarely passed to anyone. However when Sharp shot on goal Beattie would wave his arms around in frustration as though "why not pass to me". Sharp gradually played more as a winger and his instruction appeared to be cross to Beattie or set up Beattie. So in this case stats can be misleading. Also remember Beattie took free kicks and penalties which boost his stats. With Beattie in the team we didn't perform as well as though we were a 1 man team. As soon as Beattie was sold we played better and shot up the table. Also maybe I'm slightly biased based on him being the highest paid player in our history I expected a more positive effect on the team. Good player though and capable of scoring from not even half chances.

Re: Evans
Had a decent debut and I was excited about this young prospect. However he never kicked in and always faltered to decieve. Admittedly he hit the woodwork loads of times but just seemed half a yard too slow in the Championship and he wasn't worth his transfer fee or his wages. However I admit that in his final year of his contract he just got better and better and started to look PL standard. His final match was home to Leyton Orient and he stood out as a real class act far too good for league 1. Also his energy levels, drive, effort were as though his life depended on it and he was playing for another lucrative contract.

Re: Sharp this season
His finishing might have been better but I'm pleased he's not had any stick from the fans. The reason for supporting Sharp is that his attitude and effort has been consistently 1st class. He plays like he's a fan proud to wear the shirt and for me this day and age it's great to see and deserves recognition. He would be my player of the season too.

Agree with most of what you put about Beattie. I thought his attitude while at the Lane was for the most part disgraceful. Annoyingly in his first season he had 6 weeks at the start of the season and 6 weeks at the end of that season (a fair weather player if ever there was one) where he was prepared to go to war with the opposing centre half (and come out on top) and really looked the part. Those first 6 weeks I remember thinking wow, we've got another Deano here. Then the 6 months in between and his second season his all round game and attitude waere awful, he couldn't give a f**k about the team.

As you, Sheffsteel state (and many of the "Beattie was great" brigade are quite happy to overlook) in that second season when we got shut of Beattie we were 7th in the division (a borderline play-off team and performances to match), after that for the second half of the season, our form was that of title winners. I always felt if Beattie would have been fit in summer 2008 (he was injured during the summer transfer window) we'd have got shut then and gone up in the top two, as Henderson or Hulse would have been much more effective as the leader of the line (Henderson proved that once Beattie went to Stoke).

What a load of bollocks

Yes, Beattie's time at the Lane was a load of bollocks.

Beattie for the most part was ineffective as a so-called leader of line at United and his attitude was generally poor. His performances, or should I say lack of them, back that up, as does the league table for 08/09. If you don't agree disprove it.

Couldn't give a fuck about anyone's attitude as long as they score goals.

According to you Henderson was better, no point in even debating.

Amazing regards Beattie. A simply fantastic striker that gave us some truly memorable goals and performances. His free kick against Wednesday, free kick against Burnley, his perfect hatrick v Leicester, his wonder volley v Bristol, his thundertwat penalties. Great player.

If only ...Colin Morris hadn't missed 12 penalties. Hang on am I on the right thread?

Henderson was more effective in 08/09 season, the league table proves that out. 7th when Beattie left, once he'd gone and Henderson was the main striker our form was the best in the division.

If "effective" now means scoring 4 goals in 17 games, leading the forward line to no goals in the last 5 matches as we missed promotion by 3 points, and getting injured and missing the playoffs, I'd agree Henderson was effective.

To think I am enjoying your book. You must use a ghost writer.
