I don't want to knock Howard but can the defence really rely on him as much as they want to. We have a past of top keepers from Hodgkinson (I go back a long way), Kelly, Tracey and Kenny. Our defence have looked as though they are keeping one eye open for a mistake by our last lot of keepers. I really believe that we would have been promoted had we had a commanding number one.

You could be right, no chance of getting him even if NC has him as a target.

Totally agree. The Blades have only ever been half decent when we have had a good keeper and Howard isn't one of them. He was pretty average at Swindon...does he never communicate with the backs? His distribution is suspect and he is week on his right. Get rid.
What's Kenny doing these days? On loan at Ipswich or free agent?

Turner out of contract. So Long, Willis and Howard are still on the books. Is George Long no longer the answer?

You forgot Jim Brown, John Hope, Tom McAllister, Steve Conroy, Keith Waugh, Paul Tomlinson, Derek Richardson, Neil Ramsbottom, Terry Poole, John Burridge, Graham Benstead and Andy Leaning!

Joking aside, I don't really rate Howard and if we can't sign a decent keeper, I think we should give Long another go if he's continued to improve while on loan.

I'll be very surprised if you don't at least approach Richard O'Donnell from us who wants more money and a move closer to home.

You usually sign our best players, pay them double, then mis-manage them, waste their talent then get less than half the output from them.

Keepers are often confidence players. I think this Howard bashing is a costly self-fulfilling prophecy.

He was beaten by a series of unstoppable shots over two or three games. Somehow these transformed into nutmegged by tap-ins.

Then he dropped a real clanger at Yeovil.

He should have been loudly and publicly supported but there was a general nervousness throughout the club at the time.

Best and best value answer is to support him. He played very well at least till Feb and we really missed him when Turner was in goal. Let's get him back in early season form.

He's a massive (geddit?) pig though so doubt he'd join us.

True, although it could be said that the expectations at the Lane are more than some of those players were expecting/could cope with - and that's from the mouth of one of your players.

Said it before, if possible we should take a punt on approaching Chris Kirkland, not sure who else might be in for him though?

One of my workmates is a Motherwell fan and is increasingly impressed with their young keeper. He's cheap, he's coming down from Scotland, he's got it all!

He has the ability, but his confidence has gone at times in the 2nd half of the season. That said, it's a challenge when the centre-backs in front of you aren't really centre-backs. I'd say his fall in confidence is a symptom of the more important issue of not having an effective central defence. Sort that out, and I'd expect Howard to be back to his normal self.

Not good enough, you can see why he has had so many clubs a back up keeper at best. We can and should be doing so much better than Howard who just has too many mistakes in him to be a #1 keeper.

I see it as him questioning himself and taking the blame for that sequence of screamers that all flew in. Lost confidence since then. Also he's often physically the player closest to any grief that's flying around. He hears this and it affects him. My 2 pennorth.

I reckon we can quite easily narrow down Cloughs next keeper

Just think of any ex-Derby keepers that's still turning out between the sticks and there you have it

To be fair to Howard , the CB situation ( as mentioned previously ) has not helped him from a confidence and decision making aspect . Also his movement is not as agile , and pound to a penny , the bloke is been playing with his back injury.

Anybody who has had a bad back , will know how painful and physically tiring it is , never mind having to dive around and catch crosses. Think we ought to give him a bit of slack , but then again if not fully fit should Clough have played him.

Still would like that bloke from Chesterfield in the net for us or in the squad.

UTB

Why not? They are in the shit financially I hear.

I wonder how so many clubs get to keep their top players yet the best supported (and wealthiest) club in the division always sees selling as the answer.

And has highest number of assists :)

...he's just looking to engineer a move to us ;)

I'd have him here in a shot btw, reckon we could get him in at 'the right price' also...especially if Blades 'leg-end' Danny takes em down...

Why do we need Lee when we have a young goalkeeper in long who is improving all the time.we also have two young goalkeepers coming through and Ramsdale will be pushing long for the Jersey and he is still 17.we have areas which need strengthening but goalie is not one
( in my opinion of course)

I bet Long has made far more balls ups than Lee.
