I reckon we do this sort of thing in training all the time. Difference is she did it in the arena, even if there weren't many people in the arena.

Do folk agree that football is essentially a rather good thing and that it should be expanded and promoted amongst groups and regions that currently have little involvement?

50% of the population of the planet are currently an under-exploited footballing resource. We're playing a World Cup in Qatar in the name of expansion, yet folk grouse about women's footy being pushed forward.

Yeah, it's being given a real push in the media, but the standard is improving in leaps and bounds as a result, as is participation and interest. If you don't like it, change channel.

Of course women should be allowed to be interested in football, just everything has to be in its place that's all

isn't conference football also under exploited and also coming on leaps and bounds? Can't we have that on BBC instead?

My issue is that there are so many other top class sports out there which don't get the same front page billing on BBC that women's football gets

Saw bits of the England v Belgium game tonight and to be fair it was abysmal. If the standard has improved it must have been incredibly poor before.

It's a bit like a couple of weeks ago where we saw the best of the pedigree dogs battle it out at Crufts, only to be 'balanced' the week after with the 'Crufts for Mutts' debacle where I think they compete for stuff like 'dog with the waggiest tail' and 'dog that looks most like it's owner' :)

Whether it's your cup of tea or not, I essentially promoting football to female is a good thing. At the school I work at there are plenty of girls on teams and I imagine to them seeing it on TV is good motivation for them to stick at it. Also I went to the olympic final in 2012 and even though people may debate the difference in quality of the football...I found there was also a lot more football being played and a lot less time wasting and play acting so was an enjoyable evening.

So even though the standard is debatable it's great for girls to aspire to be shit at football because they don't waste time and play act?

If it wasn't on TV tonight folk could have been watching reruns of Dad's Army. It's an absolute outrage.

Whether they are rubbish or not at football, everyone should be encouraged to play the sport.

But there seems little need to dress it up as something that warrants the over-promotion it is afforded by the BBC.

It's just another one of them things that nobody really likes but that the PC world tries forcing on you.

"You will enjoy shit women football. You will promote equality. And if you don't you're a sexist pig."

I didn't say they were all rubbish. There's many very skilled players. I've been to watch MENS Luxembourg vs Belarus... Womens was infinitely higher quality. Also a sport will improve with better funding, recruitment and support which is gained by OCCASIONALLY putting some womens football on. It's not like they cancelled Match of the Day!!!

OK women's football.

Good that its becoming very popular - Bad standard.

I'm going to see Man City v Doncaster Belles on Mayday bank holiday - I'm going with a friend of mine, a lesbian/feminist friend of mine.

Now it'll be a grudge match, if you know the least bit about the unfairness of the women's league manipulation you know THAT. Man City replaced Doncaster a couple of years ago in the first division, the Belles were relegated before the season kicked off - it was pre-ordained, cheers Scudamore.

The other thing is, it'll be the first ever women's game I will have been to, I can't stand to watch it - I watched the world cup 6 years ago? in China but last time round I only bothered watching Japan v England. The standard is too poor for me, thats why I don't watch the Blades much right now, I mean, where's the fun? what's the point?

I watched the 7ish-year-old daughter of a friend of mine play in a mixed sex match, I was there with a load of Scouse Mums on the touchline some years ago, there was one outstanding lad, Holly played OK but the (grown & gobby/politically leftish [Liverpudlian]) women read what was happening completely wrong - they were full of 'well the boys are so much stronger than the girls' type comments but that was far from the case at that age. What they missed was that those lads, like we used to, were practicing football much, much more than they practiced anything else, 3 games per day, 2 in the playtimes am & pm and 1 at Dinner time in the playground with a tennis ball, every weekday and then a match or two at weekends, EVERY DAY. - that's why the boys were better. - I submit, thats probably why that goalkeeper fcuked up so royally, she looked like she'd never practiced kicking with her wrong foot......

BUT - and here's my dilemma and what I shall broach very carefully (if at all) with my friend Kat at the match in Manchester on May 2nd. I also think that for most women players - who now, fully grown are no longer as big or as strong as adult men - either the ball, or the pitch is too big for most women players.

But then the Americans seem to play so much better than we do, so maybe I'm wrong.
Discuss........and if you do discuss it please keep to the point.

I think there are other sports where women really excel which would get better viewing figures and would also encourage more women and girls into sport than football.

I personally think it's disrespectful to other sports where women are exceptional. Triathlon being a fantastic example. Women compete alongside men (at amatuer level) and if it had half the exposure as women's football it would be far more appealing because you could showcase people like Gwen Jorgenson, Non Stanford and Vicky Holland. Personally I can't wait for the Olympics for this reason.

Not saying that women shouldn't play football. Even if the standard is crap it's up to spectators if they watch it. However trying to show case a crap standard of football as something it isn't is embarrassing for everyone involved when there are better sports which would be a proper showcase.
